Democrats across the country are increasingly bracing for a brutal midterm election cycle this fall, with voters angry with rising prices poised to deliver a punishing blow to the party in control of Congress and the White House. With inflation rising and the war in Ukraine causing global uncertainty, public sentiment is growing worse and poses an ever-growing threat to Democrats’ stranglehold on power in Washington. The consumer confidence survey from the University of Michigan found its current level to be the lowest in over a decade, and an AP/NORC poll found that 70% of Americans think the economy is doing badly, and 81% see a recession coming this year.

Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas took the rare step of condemning the terror attack in Bnei Brak on Tuesday night in which 5 Israelis were killed. In a statement, Abbas “expressed his condemnation of the killing od Israeli civilians tonight, emphasizing that the killing of Palestinian and Israeli civilians only leads the situation to deteriorate.” “The cycle of violence shows that a comprehensive, just and stable peace is the shortest, most correct path to security and stability for both peoples,” Abbas said. Abbas had not issued any statements of condemnation after the two most recent attacks in Beersheva and Chadera, which caused the deaths of 6 Israelis between them. (YWN World Headquarters – NYC)

An Israeli field hospital began operating in the Ukrainian town of Mostyska on Tuesday following the arrival of medical teams from Israel, the first such initiative by any country since the war began. Mostyska is about eight miles from the Polish border in western Ukraine, near the city of Lviv, where hundreds of thousands of Ukrainians have headed since the war began. The hospital was named Kochav Meir (Shining Star) after former Israeli prime minister Golda Meir, who was not only born in Ukraine but was the founder of the Foreign Ministry’s Agency for International Development Cooperation aid program. Seventeen tons of equipment were shipped to the hospital, which is located on the grounds of an elementary school, over the past week.

Countless wonderous stories have been told about HaRav Chaim Kanievsky, z’tl, from yeshuos stemming from his brachos to his ability to know things about people or events that could only stem from ruach hakodesh. HaRav Chaim’s father-in-law, HaGaon HaRav Yosef Shalom Elyahsiv, z’tl, on the other hand, was known more for his halachic expertise than mofsim. A Kikar H’Shabbat article on Monday asked a fascinating question. How did HaRav Elyashiv, z’tl, as a renowned halachic posek, view his son-in-law’s special power to bring about yeshuos? An answer to the question was once provided by a mekurav of HaRav Elyahsiv, z’tl, HaGaon HaRav Ben-Tzion Kook. During a speech he gave in Lakewood, he told a story that testified to the great respect HaRav Elyashiv, z’tl, had for HaRav Chaim’s brachos.

Fars News, a pro-government media outlet in Iran, wrote a full-length article slamming Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky with antisemitic tropes. Zelensky, Fars claimed, is a hedonist who only want to “gain power and pleasure, using any kind of moral and financial corruption” to get what he wants. The article says Zelensky is a Jew with “deep ties to Jewish officials and the rich, such as George Soros,” and accuses him of being a “Zionist” despite Israel tossing Ukraine aside “like a handkerchief.” The article also makes a borderline insane, supremely wild claim.

As Israel prepares for a wave of new immigrants from Ukraine and Russia, Chief Rabbi of Israel Rav Dovid Lau said he will establish a special panel of dayanim to assist Ukrainian refugees in verifying their Jewish status, Yisrael Hayom reported on Thursday morning. Since Ukrainian Jews were forced to flee their homes in haste amid flying missiles, many of them will arrive without proper documentation of their Jewish status. Rav Lau sent a letter on Tuesday to Attorney-General Gali Baharav-Miara asking her to clarify whether the Batei Din have the authority to clarify the Jewish status of refugees with tourist visas.
