President Donald Trump opened his first official cabinet meeting at the White House with a prayer after making a few remarks about his administration’s accomplishments and a new mineral agreement between the United States and Ukraine.
Leading the prayer was Housing and Urban Development Secretary Scott Turner, who expressed gratitude to God “for anointing us to do this job.”
“We pray that you will give the president, the vice president wisdom, Father God, as they lead. Father, I pray for all of our colleagues that are here around the table and in this room. Lord God, we pray that we would lead with a righteous clarity,” he said in part.
Following Turner’s words, Trump praised him, saying he had done a “very good job” with the prayer.
Earlier in the meeting, Trump highlighted the effectiveness of his team, emphasizing the progress made during the first month of his presidency.
“We’ve put together a great cabinet, and we’ve had tremendous success. We’ve been given a lot of credit for having a very successful first month, and we want to make that many months and years,” he said. “We’re going to solve a lot of problems.”
Touching on foreign relations, Trump noted advancements in dealings with Russia and Ukraine, revealing an upcoming visit from Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky.
“We’re doing very well with Russia, Ukraine. President Zelensky is going to be coming on Friday; that’s now confirmed,” he said, referring to an agreement Zelensky finalized on Wednesday regarding rare earth minerals. “And we’re going to be signing an agreement, which will be a very big agreement.”
Trump took a moment to acknowledge the contributions of Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent and Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick in securing the deal.
Over the past several weeks, members of Trump’s cabinet and diplomatic team have been actively engaged in de-escalation efforts concerning the Russia-Ukraine war. Bessent traveled to Ukraine a fortnight ago for discussions with Zelensky about the mineral agreement, while Vice President JD Vance, Secretary of State Marco Rubio, and Special Envoy to Russia and Ukraine General Keith Kellogg followed up with Zelensky at the Munich Security Conference in Germany.
Meanwhile, Rubio, National Security Adviser Mike Waltz, and Special Envoy to the Middle East Steve Witkoff held talks with Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov last week during a meeting in Saudi Arabia.
