A clip featuring Joe Biden stumbling over Secretary of Defense Lloyd Austin’s name and then referring to him as “the Black man” has gone viral.
The video is an excerpt from a Breaking Entertainment News (BET) interview with the U.S. president. This interview was part of a special titled Black America Votes, which aired on Wednesday.
Biden said: “And so, it’s all about, it’s all about treating people with dignity. It’s about making sure that—look. I mean, for example, look at the heat I’m getting because I named uh, the secretary of defense, the Black man, I named Ketanji Brown, I mean, because of the people I’ve named.”
Most of the clips shared on social media end at Biden’s reference to Secretary of Defense Lloyd Austin. However, longer versions available online also include his mention of Justice Ketanji Brown Jackson, whom the president nominated to the Supreme Court in February 2022. Newsweek has reached out to Biden’s campaign team via email for comment.
