Former Congressman Anthony Weiner, who was once a Democrat, has officially submitted paperwork to the New York City Campaign Finance Board, signaling his intention to run for city council.
Craig McCarthy, the New York Post’s city hall bureau chief, reported that Weiner has “formally filed to run” for the District 2 seat on the New York City Council.
Weiner pleaded guilty in May 2017 and was subsequently sentenced to 21 months in federal prison. After serving 18 months, Weiner was released in 2019 for good behavior. Following his release, he paid a “$10,000 fine” and registered as an offender.
“Mr. Moneybags over here,” Weiner jokingly wrote in response to McCarthy’s post.
Previously, Weiner had mentioned on his radio program, The Middle with Anthony Weiner on 77 WABC, that he had been “thinking about” making a political comeback, according to Spectrum News NY1.
As reported by Breitbart News’s John Binder, in April 2023, Weiner received encouragement from friends to re-enter politics.
