Representatives from Fatah and Hamas, meeting with the facilitation of the Egyptian General Intelligence Service, have come to a series of agreements that could pave the way for indirect negotiations with Israel on both a ceasefire and the release of hostages.
According to the newspaper Al-Araby Al-Jadeed, this arrangement would involve the return of hostages held by Hamas in exchange for the freedom of imprisoned terrorists. A senior Hamas representative confirmed on Monday that the discussions in Cairo had made notable strides and that an agreement was reached to create a civilian committee to oversee governance in the Gaza Strip. Only a few minor procedural matters remain to be worked out.
The Hamas official emphasized that both parties view the current situation as a crucial opportunity to push forward initiatives aimed at easing the hardships faced by the Palestinian Arab population in Gaza. The report further clarified that the committee, which will be in charge of Gaza’s governance post-war, will not be tied to either Fatah or Hamas. Additionally, its financial resources will come from a separate, independent fund.
