During his first Cabinet meeting on Wednesday, President Donald Trump asserted that the European Union was established with the goal of exploiting the United States. He also revealed that his administration is preparing to impose a 25% tariff on goods from the 27-nation alliance.
Speaking to reporters, Trump discussed the decision to postpone the implementation of 25% tariffs on imports from Canada and Mexico. Originally set to take effect on March 4, the tariffs will now be delayed until April 2, allowing his administration additional time to assess how well both neighboring countries are addressing the influx of migrants and fentanyl into the United States. The meeting, which was broadcast live on Newsmax and Newsmax2, provided Trump with a platform to address his trade policy.
When asked about the potential tariffs on European imports, particularly as a means of addressing the substantial $235.6 billion trade imbalance between the U.S. and the EU, Trump confirmed that a resolution had been reached.
“We have made a decision and we’ll be announcing it very soon, and it will be 25%, generally speaking, and that will be on cars and all other things,” Trump stated. “And the European Union is a different case than Canada, a different kind of case. They’ve really taken advantage of us in a different way.
“They don’t accept our cars; they don’t accept essentially our farm products. They use all sorts of reasons why not. And we accept everything of them. And we have about a $300 billion deficit with the European Union.
“Now, I love the countries of Europe. … I love all countries, frankly, all different. But the European Union was formed in order to screw the United States. I mean, look, let’s be honest, the European Union was formed in order to screw the United States. That’s the purpose of it. And they’ve done a good job of it. But now I’m president.”
Trump acknowledged that the EU might attempt to retaliate with its own tariffs but dismissed the idea that such a move would be effective. He warned that if the EU imposed countermeasures, the U.S. could simply halt imports from Europe altogether.
