The death toll from the novel coronavirus in the United States has surged past 4,000—that’s double the figure from just three days ago. The latest figures from Johns Hopkins University reveal there are more than 189,000 confirmed virus cases in the U.S., and 4,081 people have died.
The news comes the morning after President Donald Trump said that at least 100,000 and as many as 250,000 Americans are likely to die from the pandemic.

Israeli Health Ministry Director-General Moshe Bar-Siman-Tov said that several countries, including Israel, has decided to recommend that the public wear protective masks when leaving the house.
“There is no hurry to head out and buy masks, you can improvise at home. You can cover your face with a piece of cloth, for example.”
The Sion company in Sderot will produce 35 million face masks for the Defense Ministry.
11 million masks will be produced by the end of April and 5.5 million N95 masks will be produced as well.
The Defense Ministry helped import a special machine to make production of the advanced masks possible.

As Israel saw its 21st coronavirus fatality on Wednesday and the number of confirmed infections in the country hit 5,591, the Israel National Employment Service (INES) announced that the number of unemployment claimants has exceeded one million for the first time.
Israel’s 21st coronavirus casualty was a 98-year-old woman who had “serious and complicated” preexisting conditions and had been hospitalized at the Soroka Medical Center in Beersheva. According to Israel’s Health Ministry, she represents the second victim to have contracted the virus at the Mishan nursing home in southern Jerusalem, with 12 other residents also testing positive, at least three of whom are currently in serious condition.

While Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and challenger Benny Gantz have agreed to work towards the formation of an emergency unity government to end a bitter political standoff and respond effectively to the coronavirus crisis, negotiations on political appointments as well as government policies are proving difficult.
Several key issues are now placing the signing of a unity agreement in doubt. Likud MK Miki Zohar, a member of Netanyahu’s negotiating team, told JNS that “a unity government is important, but not at all costs.”
