A tremendous kiddush hashem took place at Camp Rayim Mesiva (Aliya) on Thursday when bochurim lined up to applaud and thank firefighters who had worked to douse a blaze that destroyed two of their camp’s bunk houses. The fire was sparked Thursday morning in one of the bunkhouses and growing out of control for a time, necessitating a major emergency response from fire and Hatzolah personnel. Thankfully, the fire was extinguished before it could spread further than the two affected bunkhouses, and nobody sustained any injuries in the blaze. After the incident, Camp Rayim released the following statement: “First, we would like to assure you that everyone in camp is b”h safe and doing fine. This morning during learning groups, a fire broke out in one of the bunkhouses.

Emergency personnel including Catskills Hatzolah responded to two different accidents involving overturned vehicles – just minutes apart from each other. Thankfully, neither incident had victims with any life-threatening injuries. A photo of one of the accidents appears to show a car with bald tires. A fast moving blaze ripped through a building in South Fallsburg, early Sunday morning. Numerous fire departments from all over Sullivan and Orange counties responded to the the scene to assist in fighting the three-alarm blaze at at 5218 Main Street. Initial reports were that there were people trapped inside the building, but as of Sunday morning it did not appear to be the case. Catskills Hatzolah was on the scene as well. Route 42 (Main Street) was shut down in both directions, causing a traffic mess in the area. A small plane went down in Monticello, Friday afternoon. It happened at around 12:45, when the one engine plane crashed on Route 42, south of Monticello – just three miles past Ichud Bungalow Colony. The pilot managed to escape the aircraft, which appeared to have attempted to make an emergency landing on the roadway. Emergency personnel were on the scene, including the Monticello and Forestburg Fire Departments, and the Sullivan County Sheriff Department. The entire Route 42 was shut in both directions. A young child was pulled from a swimming pool in Fallsburg on Friday afternoon. The incident occurred at around 3:45PM at Harmony Estates on Laurel Avenue. Catskills Hatzolah responded to the scene, and initially requested a chopper to airlift the child to a trauma center. The child was instead transported by Hatzolah to a hospital. Sources tell YWN that the child was initially not breathing and Hatzolah initially performed CPRM on the child. Bichasdei Hashem, the child was conscious and alert when transporting the child. This is the second child to have nearly drowned in the Catskills in the past two days. On Thursday, YWN reported about an incident at Leisure Lake Estates in Swan Lake. Tehillim is needed for a three year old child who was pulled from a swimming pool in the Catskills on Thursday. Sources tell YWN that the incident occurred at 2:00PM at Leisure Lake Estates in Swan Lake. Catskills Hatzolah was on the scene in seconds, and the child was found breathing. She was transported to Catskill Regional Medical Center for observation. A bit later in the day, the child began having complications, and the child is likely to be airlifted to a different facility for treatment. Please say Tehillim for Etya bas Chana. An Orthodox Jewish man was the victim of a possible hate crime in the Catskills. The man was biking along Route 52 in Woodbourne on Wednesday evening was he was hit by 4 BB gun pellets fired from a passing car. No words were exchanged. Sources tell YWN that the victim managed to take down the license plate of the offender’s vehicle before seeking non-emergency medical attention for minor injuries. A police report was made and identifying features of the vehicle, along with its license plate number, was sent to officers in the area. Moments ago, a car fitting the description and having a matching license plate was stopped by Fallsburg Police in the area. YWN will update this story as soon as additional details are available. Sloatsburg NY. Once again, travelers making their way up to the Catskills on Thursday nights will be able to stop for Mincha and Maariv minyanim at the Sloatsburg Rest Area, located on the northbound Thruway between exits 15A and 16. The Tefilos Mordche Mincha Area is named in memory of long time Asken, Rabbi Mordche Friedman z’l who oversaw the Mincha Area for years and will be open from 5 to 11 PM each Thursday night throughout the summer season. The area is located on the Northbound side of the New York State Thruway, between exits 15A and 16. Community leaders, Askonim, have been working tirelessly together with NY State Police and the Thruway Authority to ensure that the area will be available for those seeking tefilla b’tzibbur on their way to the mountains.
