Tears for Meron

It has been an incredibly difficult two days for everyone, the tragedy in Meron taking place miles away geographically still striking close to all of our hearts. Like you, we at Misaskim were shocked as reports began emerging and our members on the ground headed immediately to the staging area where the abundant devastation became quickly became clear. As the minutes ticked by, the news went from bad to worse as the number of fatalities continued to mount, with talk of American deaths beginning to swirl. By 9 PM the Misaskim command center had been activated, with 10 people fielding hundreds of calls throughout the night, trying to track down who was waiting for a ride home from Meron, who had been hospitalized and who was unaccounted for.

The question of whether to serve a search warrant for Rudy Giuliani’s records simmered inside the Justice Department in the waning months of the Trump administration, dividing officials in New York and Washington and remaining unresolved for a new leadership team to sort out. The new crowd resolved it this week in dramatic fashion. On Wednesday, federal agents raided the home and office of former President Donald Trump’s personal attorney, collecting phones and computers as part of their probe into whether he broke U.S. lobbying laws by failing to register as a foreign agent related to his work. It’s not clear exactly why Justice Department officials chose this particular moment to strike, but it wasn’t out of character for the agency under new Attorney General Merrick Garland.

Mayor Bill de Blasio announced that New York City plans to “fully reopen” starting July 1. “Our plan is to fully reopen New York City on July 1,” de Blasio said on MSNBC’s “Morning Joe.” The mayor declared, “This is going to be the summer of New York City” during the announcement in a televised interview Thursday morning. “We are ready for stores to open, for businesses to open, offices, theaters—full strength,” the mayor said. “Because look, what we’re seeing is people have gotten vaccinated in extraordinary numbers—6.3 million vaccinations in New York City to date.” “We know the vaccination effort’s going to grow and grow,” de Blasio said. The mayor said the city’s healthcare teams looked at the numbers and that the city is “well on the way” to a full return.

(By Yehudit Garmaise) While some Boro Park groups have voiced their support for Andrew Yang for mayor of New York City, many other Jewish leaders, mosdos, and askanim, not just from Boro Park, but from Williamsburg, Staten Island, Far Rockaway, and Queens continue to generate a tsunami of enthusiasm and full-hearted support for mayoral candidate Eric Adams based on the community’s previous interactions with the Brooklyn borough president and its gratitude for Adam’s loyalty to the Jewish community. Last week, mayoral candidate Eric Adams visited many local mosdos and then with the Munkatcher Rebbe, with whom he has met many times, to continue to discuss the issues facing the Jewish community and to receive the Rebbe’s blessings as he runs for mayor of New York City.

A law enforcement official tells the Associated Press that federal investigators have executed a search warrant at Rudy Giuliani’s Manhattan residence. The former New York City mayor has been under investigation for several years over his business dealings in Ukraine. Details of the reasons for the search were not immediately available. The official who confirmed the execution of the search warrant did not have approval to speak publicly about an ongoing investigation and spoke to the AP on condition of anonymity. A message left for Giuliani’s lawyer wasn’t immediately returned.
