New York Governor Andrew Cuomo lifted COVID restrictions in the state’s orange and yellow zone micro-clusters. A few yellow zones remain in the Bronx, Washington Heights, Queens, and Newburgh. But in New York City, Cuomo said a plan for NYC restaurants remains in the works. He is talking to political officials and the health department. The governor said he will have a plan for city restaurants by the end of the week. “We will have an announcement at the end of the week, but we are looking at going back to the 25%, that would be the question. How and when we do you do that,” Cuomo said. Cuomo also said he is also looking at the 10 p.m. closing time, but did not have an announcement yet. (YWN World Headquarters – NYC)

The New York State attorney general accused the Cuomo administration of undercounting coronavirus-related deaths at nursing homes by as much as 50 percent, according to a report released on Thursday. The count of deaths in state nursing homes has been a source of controversy for Gov. Andrew M. Cuomo and state Health Department officials, who have been sensitive to any suggestion that they played any role in the number of nursing home deaths, which the state put at more than 8,500. They have also been accused of obscuring a more accurate estimate of nursing home deaths, because the state only counted deaths at the actual facilities, rather than including deaths of residents who were transferred to a hospital and died there.

The US Supreme Court is declining to take up the case of former New York Assembly Speaker Sheldon Silver, who is serving a 6.5-year prison sentence after being convicted in a corruption case. The high court declines to take up the Democrat’s appeal. Once one of the three most powerful state officials, Silver was ousted as speaker in 2015 and was convicted later that year. His original conviction was overturned on appeal, but he was convicted again in 2018. Part of that conviction was then tossed out on another appeal, leading to yet another sentencing in July. Silver, who is 76, began serving his sentence in August.

The confrontation happened at around 10 p.m. Sunday in Queens after two men stole a car that had been left with the keys in the ignition, Chief of Patrol Juanita Holmes said. Police tracked the stolen car using the owner’s cellphone, which had been left inside, Holmes said at a briefing early Monday. One of the officers fired and struck the 28-year-old passenger in the chest, Holmes said. He was taken to a hospital, where he was in stable condition, she said.

New York City “does not have enough doses” of Covid-19 vaccine to “be able to meet the demand we know exists among New Yorkers”, the city’s health commissioner Dave Chokshi told CNN on Monday. Chokshi said the current supply, only a few thousand doses, would be used in the next 24 to 48 hours. During one week in January, more than 220,000 doses were administered, with a New Yorker getting the jab every three seconds. Chokshi said the city had the capacity to easily double the number of vaccinations, if it had the supply, and more than 20,000 vaccine appointments scheduled for last week had had to be rescheduled. He expected to get a re-supply on Tuesday and Wednesday of 100,000 doses, but those would be gone by the end of the week.
