The United Nations’ top court stopped short Friday of ordering a cease-fire in Gaza in a genocide case but demanded that Israel try to contain death and damage in its military offensive in the tiny coastal enclave. South Africa brought the case, which goes to the core of one of the world’s most intractable conflicts, and had asked the court to order Israel to halt its operation. In the highly anticipated decision made by a panel of 17 judges, the International Court of Justice decided not to throw out the case — and ordered six so-called provisional measures to protect Palestinians in Gaza. “The court is acutely aware of the extent of the human tragedy that is unfolding in the region and is deeply concerned about the continuing loss of life and human suffering,” Joan E.

It was just a few months back that I penned a letter on YWN warning people of a growing laundry list of financial schemes and scams that have plagued our communities in recent times. From outright thieves to dopey businessmen and their pie-in-the-sky projections, tens of millions of hard-earned dollars have been wiped from the bank accounts of our community members’ bank accounts. In that original letter, I begged everyone to be mindful of what they were getting into when entering a business deal. Far too many people were ready to hand over their money for the impossible promise of sky-high returns, only to predictably be left emptyhanded – and sometimes destitute – when the deal originator turned out to be a grifter.

A reserve soldier who fought in Gaza near the tragic building collapse that killed 21 soldiers earlier this week told Ynet that if the soldiers had worked in accordance with safety regulations, 14 soldiers would still be alive. Earlier this month, six soldiers were killed when IDF tank fire accidentally triggered the detonation of a tunnel while the soldiers were still in it. Following the tragic incident, soldiers were instructed never to stay in a home while it was being rigged for demolition unless they were carrying out the work. However, according to the reservist, these orders weren’t heeded. “The operation should have been simple,” the reservist said.

Following Lebanese reports that the IDF destroyed the Iranian airport in Lebanon in its third attack on the country on Thursday, the IDF confirmed the report. In September, Defense Minister Yoav Gallant presented evidence of the airport, including photos of Iranian flags flying over the runway, in a speech at Reichman University. The airport could accommodate large drones, some with explosives built from Iranian blueprints. Gallant said at the time that “the land is Lebanese, the control is Iranian, the target is Israel.” “A short time ago, fighter jets attacked a series of Hezbollah military sites in the area of Tyre and Mghairiyeh in Lebanon,” the IDF spokesperson stated. “Among the targets were military buildings and sites used by the Hezbollah air unit.

Gazan civilians in Khan Younis on Thursday held a protest against Hamas and the war in Gaza on the streets of Khan Younis “The people want a ceasefire!”, they chanted in a protest that appeared much larger than the protest held in Deir al-Balah, which was attended mainly by women and children. “Netanyahu and [Hamas leader Yahya] Sinwar, we want a ceasefire!” the protesters shouted. “Enough of war, enough of destruction.” (YWN Israel Desk – Jerusalem)

The IDF on Wednesday  released new footage from recent operations of the Givati Brigade in the southern region of Khan Younis. These operations, part of a broader offensive by the 98th Division, have led to significant achievements against Hamas, the IDF said in a statement accompanying the footage. According to the IDF, in the past day, the Givati Brigade, in coordination with other units, has conducted extensive operations in Khan Younis. During these operations, the Givati soldiers have successfully eliminated multiple Hamas gunmen through a combination of ground clashes, tank shelling, and targeted airstrikes.

The IDF says it has successfully demolished a Hamas tunnel in the central Gaza Strip, which was situated just 1.5 kilometers away from the Israeli border. The operation was carried out by reservists of the 646th Brigade in coordination with combat engineers from the elite Yahalom unit. The IDF revealed that the tunnel, spanning one kilometer in length and located 20 meters underground, served as a critical covert connection between northern and southern parts of the Gaza Strip. After its discovery, the tunnel was destroyed by combat engineers, neutralizing the threat it had once posed. During the operation, the IDF also uncovered a cache of military equipment, including rockets and anti-aircraft missiles, positively linked to Hamas. (YWN World Headquarters – NYC)
