WASHINGTON — President Donald Trump appears to be cheering on the tougher tactics being used by law enforcement around the country to confront sometimes violent demonstrators joining in protests over the death of George Floyd in Minneapolis. On Saturday, the president commended National Guard troops deployed in Minneapolis, declaring “No games!” He also said police […]

We are grief-stricken with this immeasurable tragedy. Mrs. Baila Rivka Mertzbach nee Uhr a”h A young mother from Monsey, with no prior medical conditions, has tragically succumbed to the coronavirus. She left behind a family of 11 children with the youngest just 1 year old. This tragedy has shaken us to the core. The children have been left shattered, lost, and bereft of their mother’s love and warm care. “How will we survive the excruciating pain of living without Mommy?” her family is weeping.

Just a few days remain until the holiday of Shavuos, and the global community has begun to prepare. Many have prepared their grocery lists, planned where they will be ordering their flowers from, and even decided which seforim they will be learning. Rav Chaim Kanievsky will be dedicating some of his precious time on Shavuos to one particular cause, and recommends others do the same.  This year, Vaad HaRabbanim’s Shavuos fund will be raising money to help those who have been hit particularly hard by the coronavirus. Rav Chaim has given a bracha to all those who donate that they should merit to have nachas from their children, and success in finances. This comes at a particularly relevant time, when many are looking for ways to improve their parnassah.

The siyum, planned to be an international event, with participants worldwide joining together, has been canceled due to the virus.

Leizer Porush, 22, the son of Rav Tzvi, z’l and Baila Porush, a’h, who passed away days apart after they both fell ill with the coronavirus, got engaged on Tuesday. The shidduch had already been suggested when the parents were still alive but before the two could meet, the coronavirus began to spread and the parents became ill, according to a Kikar H’Shabbos report. “It’s a great simcha,” said one of family members to Kikar H’Shabbat, “because this was the will of the parents, who discussed the shidduch while they were still alive.” Leizer’s mother, Baila Porush, a’h, passed away first – only days after she began feeling ill – at the age of 54.

Readers around the world have been following the story of 4-year-old Menachem Blau, a little boy from Israel who needs to fly to America immediately in order to save his life. Menachem was born with a rare condition which causes cysts to grow on his vocal cords. He has had surgery every few months since his infancy, and has now had over 25 procedures. Recently, Israeli doctors said they are no longer able to help, and that his only hope lies in the hands of American specialists. The Blaus were set to fly to America when COVID-19 took over the world, and American hospitals cancelled procedures for foreigners. The Blaus were left to wait, hoping their little boy would live to see the surgery he needed.

The world lost another giant last week, with the passing of 59-year-old father of 12 Rabbi Refael Schoenfeld. Schoenfeld was famous throughout Israel for his volunteer work with ZAKA and the Cheva Kadisha. He dedicated his life to giving others a proper Jewish burial. It was with tremendous pain that his colleagues buried him after his life was taken by COVID-19. More pained than the countless families who had benefited from Rabbi Schoenfeld’s chesed, however, was his own widow and 12 children. They have anxiously awaited his return from the hospital since last month, and have now had to accept that their father is never coming home. An emergency fund has been started to help the Schoenfeld navigate the future.

No words can describe the pain that one family has been through in the last month. Rav Elimelech Biderman puts it beautifully and powerfully with this message, translated from Yiddish: “Some people acquire the World to Come in one hour. I want to tell you about something that can split even a Jewish heart of stone. Nebach, it’s a tragedy – a father and mother gone, only 2 days apart. We know what Chazal say about an orphan, especially one orphaned from both father and mother. “Chap arein” (Grab) this mitzvah! Acquire your portion in the World to Come in one hour. The Vilna Gaon writes that nothing protects from sorrow more than charity. Charity saves from death.
