Israel’s Health Ministry confirmed 1,165 new coronavirus cases on Wednesday morning, with the positivity rate dropping to 3%. The number of seriously ill patients dropped to less than 600 for the first time in weeks, standing at 591, of whom 229 are ventilated. The death toll has increased to 2,278. Despite the seemingly good news of reduced virus rates, senior health officials have been warning that Israel’s infection rate is still very high and that there will be a spike in the infection rate in the next week or two due to violations of coronavirus restrictions and the loosening of restrictions, especially the reopening of the educational system.

Rosh Yeshivas Brisk HaGaon HaRav Meshulam Dovid Halevi Soloveitchik has contracted the coronavirus and is suffering from a lung infection. He is being treated with antibiotics and oxygen assistance at his home in Gush Shemonim in Jerusalem. The Rav has been feeling weak since Sukkos and he developed a lung infection, a hallmark symptom of the coronavirus. He was tested for the coronavirus and the results were negative but a subsequent test showed that he was positive. “The Rosh Yeshivah is at home and being treated with antibiotics and at times with oxygen,” one of the Rav’s relatives told Kikar H’Shabbos. “His condition is stable.

Hagaon HaRav Baruch Mordechai Ezrachi, Rosh Yeshivas Ateres Yisrael and member of the Degel Moetzes Gedolei HaTorah tested positive for the coronavirus on Sunday. HaRav Ezrachi, 92, is Baruch Hashem in good condition and is continuing his daily routine as usual, according to his family members. However, due to his advanced age, HaRav Ezrachi’s family members have requested from the public to daven for the refuah of HaRav Baruch Mordechai ben Hinda Malka b’soch shaar cholei Yisrael. HaRav Ezrachi’s wife, Rebbetzin Shomit, contracted the coronavirus about a month ago and b’chasdei Hashem, has fully recovered.

Israel’s Health Ministry confirmed 395 new coronavirus cases on Sunday morning in the previous 24 hours, the lowest daily tally in months. Just a few short weeks ago, the daily tally of cases averaged about 8,000. The positivity rate is also at a record low of 2.8%, down from 15% several weeks ago. There are currently 33,727 active virus cases, with 673 seriously ill patients, of whom 237 are ventilated. The death toll has risen to 2,190. About 30 IDF soldiers from the elite Paratroopers Brigade tested positive for the coronavirus on Sunday, according to an Army Radio report. Over 900 IDF soldiers and staff members are currently positive for the coronavirus and close to 5,000 are in quarantine.

The number of active cases in Israel now stands at 35,212. Israel’s attorney general announced Thursday he was not launching a criminal investigation into a company share deal between Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and his cousin or reopen the submarine case. In a statement, Attorney General Avichai Mandelblit said he wasn’t pursuing a criminal investigation because of a lack of evidence. Mandelblit’s decision takes a weight off of Netanyahu, who is currently on trial for three other corruption affairs after being charged with fraud, breach of trust and accepting bribes. Netanyahu, whose trial begins evidentiary hearings in January, denies any wrongdoing.
