Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu fired his defense minister on Sunday, a day after the former army general called for a halt to the planned overhaul of Israel’s judiciary that has fiercely divided the country. The move signals the prime minister will move ahead this week with plans for the overhaul, which has sparked widespread opposition. Tens of thousands of protesters have taken to the streets, military and business leaders have spoken out against it and leading allies of Israel have voiced concerns. Outgoing Defense Minister Yoav Gallant, a former army general, is a senior member of Netanyahu’s ruling Likud party.

In a rally held in Waco, Texas on Saturday night, former President Donald Trump launched his 2024 presidential campaign by criticizing Florida Governor Ron DeSantis. Trump accused DeSantis of being disloyal and hit him on issues such as Social Security, Medicare, and the coronavirus pandemic. During his speech, Trump recounted an emotional meeting with DeSantis during Florida’s 2018 gubernatorial primary race. According to Trump, DeSantis approached him with tears in his eyes and begged for an endorsement to help him win the nomination against Adam Putnam, who was leading in the polls. Despite believing that DeSantis had no chance of winning, Trump endorsed him, and DeSantis won the nomination.

Defense Minister Yoav Gallant (Likud) delivered a statement to the media on Motzei Shabbos and called for a temporary halt to the judicial reform legislation. “In the last few weeks, something dramatic has occurred,” Gallant said. “I meet the commanders and the soldiers and I hear the voices coming from the field – and I’m worried. The events taking place in Israeli society don’t skip over the IDF. The source of our strength is eroding. I’m saying in the clearest way possible – the rift is penetrating the IDF and the security agencies…this is a clear, immediate and tangible danger to the security of the state.

An amendment to the Parents Bill of Rights being advanced by Republicans in the House of Representatives was proposed by Congressman Mike Lawler, whose district covers Rockland County, in order to make it clear that non-public elementary and secondary schools would not be subject to any requirements under the bill. In a speech on Thursday, Lawler discussed New York Governor Kathy Hochul and her administration’s efforts to impose requirements on private schools in his district. He also mentioned that his constituents have contacted his office to express their concerns that the state is trying to force them to change the way they educate their own children. “A key provision of this new state regulation was actually thrown out in court today,” Lawler noted in his speech.

The NYPD was searching for two suspects following a stabbing in Flatbush on Thursday night, Flatbush Scoop reported. The incident occured on Nostrand Avenue and Avenue L at around 9:40PM. Sources tell YWN that an altercation broke out on the bus, and when the victim exited, he was stabbed. The victim was transported by EMS to a hospital with a stab wound to the head. The NYPD was searching for two black males who fled on foot. A child is in critical condition following a horrific car crash in Lakewood, Thursday afternoon, Lakewood Alerts reported. The accident occurred at the intersection of Massachusetts Avenue and Route 70 at around 4:00PM. One of the vehicles involved overturned and burst into flames. Arriving Hatzolah volunteers requested numerous ambulances and Paramedics to respond. Following rumors on Thursday evening that Prime Minister Binyamin Netanyahu was halting his government’s plan for judicial reform due to fears of IDF reservist refusals harming Israel’s security, the prime minister held a press conference at about 9 p.m. The prime minister spoke after a meeting with Defense Minister Yoav Gallant, who had planned on publicly calling for the suspension of the judicial reform, but changed his mind at the last minute, instead meeting with Netanyahu. There were rumors that Gallant had threatened to quit if the reform was not suspended. Netanyahu also met with Shin Bet chief Ronen Bar. The rumors caused many Likud MKs to threaten to quit the government if the judicial reform was halted.
