A plan to hike tolls on the Garden State Parkway by 27% and New Jersey Turnpike by 36% was adopted by the Turnpike Authority on Wednesday; the tolls hikes were rammed through without the public being able to participate in person due to the ongoing statewide ‘stay at home’ order. The proposed toll hikes would take effect Sept. 13. They would result in an average increase by about $1.30 on the Turnpike, while cash tolls at mainline toll plazas on the Parkway would rise by 40 cents, to $1.90. The extra revenue would be used to fund a $24 billion construction plan, which includes widening 15 sections of the Turnpike and Parkway, and installing cashless tolls.

(By Rabbi Yair Hoffman for 5TJT.com) There are numerous stores in New York City that are facing severe economic disaster.  Although some businesses have been allowed to remain open because they have been classified as essential businesses, others may not be open. Thus, candy stores and convenience stores are all open. They are considered essential.  Clothing shops and shoe stores in Boro Park and Williamsburg are told to be closed. It is random and unfortunate. Many, in fact, argue that the law should not decide to destroy a person’s livelihood, and that these business owners should at least be given the chance to open safely – mandating masks and social distancing. This is particularly true, when so many other venues have been allowed to be open.

It’s been a long three years for Jennie and Gary Landsman. The Landsmans are parents to Benny and Josh, two young boys ages 4 and 3. The boys suffer from Canavan disease, a rare, life-threatening progressive brain disorder. Most children with Canavan disease die by age ten. Three years ago the Landsmans were told by doctors that there is nothing they can do to save their boys. “We were told to just go home and love them,” said Jennie. Though devastated, Jennie mustered up her strength and began researching the disease online. She connected with other families affected by Canavan disease and learned about Dr. Paola Leone, a renowned neuroscientist, and director of the Cell and Gene Therapy Center at Rowan University’s School of Osteopathic Medicine in New Jersey.

On Tuesday, in the Jerusalem District Court, an indictment was filed against Elazar Rompler for child abuse. Rompler served as a school principal in Canada for the Lev Tahor cult and is charged with mentally and physically abusing at least two children, ages 8 and 9 respectively between the years of 2009-2011. Rompler, 46, held his position before the group fled from Canada to Guatemala in 2014. The children in question, were children who belonged to the cult and were under his tutelage. In one case Rompler allegedly had a child stripped, tied up, and beaten with a stick for several hours over suspicions that the child stole money from a tzedaka box. He is also accused of instructing other teachers to hold a child down and beat the child repeatedly for allegedly lying.

Rav Yehudah Grami, the Chief Rabbi of Teheran, attacked Prime Minister Binyamin Netanyahu and “the Zionists” on state television in Hebrew to millions of Iranians on Friday. The speech was delivered for the anti-Israel Quds (Jerusalem) Day, marked every year on the last Friday of Ramadan. “We, the Jews of Iran, want to send this message to Zionists, first and foremost to Netanyahu,” Rav Garmi began his speech in Hebrew on Channel 3, Iran’s state TV channel. “Know that you don’t represent the Jewish people.

Twitter slapped a warning label on one of President Trump’s tweets for the first time on Tuesday, cautioning readers that despite the president’s claims, “fact checkers” say there is “no evidence” that mail-in voting would increase fraud risks — and that “experts say mail-in ballots are very rarely linked to voter fraud.” Within minutes, Trump accused Twitter of “interfering in the 2020 Presidential Election … based on fact-checking by Fake News CNN and the Amazon Washington Post.” The president added that the platform “is completely stifling FREE SPEECH” and vowed: “I, as President, will not allow it to happen!” The warning label prompted conservatives to again condemn Twitter for what they have called its apparent left-wing bias: Just two months ago, Twitter flagged a video uploaded b

A large shipment of kosher meat was sent recently from the United States to the Jewish community in the United Arab Emirates, B’Chadrei Chareidim reported. Members of the Jewish community in the UAE told Kan News that the state of Israel has no connection with the delivery from the US, adding that this is the first time that such a large amount of meat was delivered to the community. Last year it was reported that a kosher catering company was established in Dubai but the company mainly prepares food that is not meat-based. The meat delivery may be a result of the growth of the Jewish community in the UAE.

The Baltimore Police Department is investigating a disturbing incident that occurred on Tuesday morning on Yeshiva Lane, when a man attempted to run over a senior staff member at Yeshiva Ner Yisroel with a vehicle. Sources tell YWN that at around 7:45AM, a staff member had just gotten into his car outside the Yeshiva, when a man deliberately rammed his vehicle into his car. The man managed to get out of his car and run inside the Yeshiva building. The suspect then continued his rampage, driving at a high-rate of speed and began chasing another senior staff member of the high school with his vehicle. Eyewitnesses say that he missed striking him by inches, as the suspect drove at a high rate of speed. Police responded in seconds, and managed to apprehend him and take him into custody.
