A complete handwritten and autographed letter by Rabbi Yaakov Yisrael Kanievsky, the Steipler, brother-in-law of the Chazon Ish and father of Rabbi Chaim Kanievsky, of blessed memory. The Jewish community of Chicago had consulted with the Steipler regarding efforts to bring back Rabbi Chaim Kreiswirth, the Gaavad of Antwerp, to serve once again as Rav in their community. (Rabbi Kreiswirth had taught at Beis Medrash LeTorah in Skokie, Chicago not long before the writing of this letter.)

Is Alternative Healing/Medicine Kosher? Much confusion and misinformation reigns in our Chareidi community concerning medical treatment and procedures. The latest circulating rumor or the assertion of an elderly bubby receives immediate acceptance as the way to deal with ailments – physical, emotional or mental. The mindset is that “If “they” say “it works”; then for sure we shud do it”. To so many even the idea that medical treatment needs to be kosher approved is foreign. But just like food that many of the most delectable ingredients are just not available to us because they do not conform to the Torah rules, so too medical treatment must also adhere to Torah principles.

[Rashb”i] Are the 2000-year-old whispers more than legends? The secrets I uncovered  are more startling than I imagined. Buried not just underground, but beneath silence, politics, and power. When one of the most mysterious and powerful institutions in the world suddenly slammed its door in my face, I realised I had stumbled upon truths that I was never supposed to know. It’s not a journey remotely like any I’ve done before – in fact, it’s not something anyone has ever done before. But in a world that’s screaming Chevlei Mashiach, I set out on a mission to answer one burning question that’s been whispered in our hearts since the Romans stormed our beloved Beis Hamikdash and left destruction in their wake: Where is the Menorah?

The glosses were written across different periods, as evidenced by the variation in ink color. The Rabbanim of Tzfas, led by Rabbi Shmuel Heller, wrote regarding these glosses: “And here [in Tzfas] were the four volumes of Shulchan Aruch through which the aforementioned author learned, and on their margins he inscribed in his holy handwriting insightful notes to clarify the plain meaning and halacha, with great sharpness.”

At the beginning of the siddur appears his approbation, where he writes: “Said Ephraim… it is from my hand that this siddur, with the commentary of the Ra’avan, has come to print.” Later, he requests that the siddur not be reprinted without his permission, in accordance with accepted practice. Rabbi Shemaria of Hrymailiv, a disciple of Rabbi Ephraim Zalman Margulies, also refers in his work Iyun Tefillah to the “siddur printed with the commentary of the Ra’avan, of blessed memory, which my teacher printed in Ostroh…”

“A beautiful and exceptional discourse from Rabbi Yehudah ben Bezalel” –  the famed Maharal of Prague. This drush was delivered in honor of Shabbos HaGadol in the year 1589. In it, the Maharal masterfully weaves together many themes from all parts of the Torah. He does this according to the four methods of Torah study – pshat, remez, drush and sod – known by the acronym ‘Pardes.’ The Maharal concludes his drasha with a focus on the subject of the sukkah and the Arba Minim!
