Former Democratic Rep. Tim Ryan has called for a “complete reset” of the Democratic Party, describing it as “toxic in so many places” following Vice President Kamala Harris’ loss to President-elect Donald Trump. Ryan’s remarks, made during an appearance on MSNBC’s The Weekend, reflect growing concerns within the party about its messaging and connection with working-class voters. “Our brand is toxic,” Ryan said bluntly. “We need a total rebranding. People want to trust us, but we didn’t give them enough reasons to.” Ryan, who represented Ohio for 20 years before losing a Senate race to Vice President-elect J.D. Vance, criticized the party for failing to effectively promote key legislative achievements like the Inflation Reduction Act and the CHIPS and Science Act.

The head of Britain’s foreign intelligence service said Friday that Russia is conducting a “staggeringly reckless” sabotage campaign against Ukraine’s Western allies, and that his spies are working to stop the consequences from spiraling out of control. And in a message aimed in part at U.S. President-Elect Donald Trump, MI6 chief Richard Moore said that Russian victory in Ukraine would threaten American, as well as European, security.

An offer of NATO membership to territory under Kyiv’s control would end “the hot stage of the war” in Ukraine, but any proposal to join the military alliance should be extended to all parts of the country that fall under internationally recognized borders, President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said in a broadcast interview. Zelenskyy’s remarks on Friday signaled a possible way forward to the difficult path Ukraine faces to future NATO membership. At their summit in Washington in July, the 32 members declared Ukraine on an “irreversible” path to membership. However, one obstacle to moving forward has been the view that Ukraine’s borders would need to be clearly demarcated before it could join so that there can be no mistaking where the alliance’s pact of mutual defense would come into effect.

Israel’s Strategic Affairs Minister Ron Dermer informed U.S. President-elect Donald Trump last month that 60 of the 101 hostages held by Hamas in Gaza are thought to be alive, according to a report by Yisrael Hayom. The updated figure is higher than the earlier estimate of 51 hostages, which Israeli intelligence provided in early November. Officially, 76 of the 101 hostages are classified as alive. Of the captives, 97 were kidnapped during Hamas’s October 7, 2023, attack on southern Israel. During a November 10 meeting at Trump’s Mar-a-Lago estate, Dermer reportedly delivered messages from Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and discussed Israel’s strategies regarding Lebanon, Gaza, Iran, and Israeli-Saudi normalization. Two school buses transporting students from London’s Jewish Free School (JFS) were attacked by a group of teenagers hurling rocks and shouting anti-Israel slurs on Thursday, according to reports from The Jewish Chronicle. The incident unfolded as approximately ten teenagers from a different school targeted the buses, with four attackers boarding one of them. Witnesses described the attackers swearing at the students, shouting (expletive removed) Israel,” and throwing objects at the children. Some of the teenagers reportedly filmed the attack. A 12-year-old boy who was on one of the buses told The Jewish Chronicle that the scene was chaotic and terrifying. “I was sitting at the front of the bus and everyone was completely terrified and hiding under our seats,” the boy said.

The U.S. Navy is transforming a costly flub into a potent weapon with the first shipborne hypersonic weapon, which is being retrofitted aboard the first of its three stealthy destroyers. The USS Zumwalt is at a Mississippi shipyard where workers have installed missile tubes that replace twin turrets from a gun system that was never activated because it was too expensive. Once the system is complete, the Zumwalt will provide a platform for conducting fast, precision strikes from greater distances, adding to the usefulness of the warship. “It was a costly blunder. But the Navy could take victory from the jaws of defeat here, and get some utility out of them by making them into a hypersonic platform,” said Bryan Clark, a defense analyst at the Hudson Institute. The annual “class picture” of Chabad Shluchim took place Sunday morning at the 41st annual International Conference of Chabad-Lubavitch Emissaries (Kinus Hashluchim). The photo, taken under the iconic gables of 770 Eastern Parkway, Chabad headquarters in Brooklyn, N.Y., features thousands of black-hatted rabbis and represents not just an annual conference tradition – it has been captured since 1984 – but also the many faces of Chabad rabbis who bring Yiddishkeit to the world. Rabbis from war-torn Ukraine to ones stationed in the towns along Israel’s hostile borders; rabbis serving college campuses across the United States to those bringing Judaism to communities that have sprung up in the Southwest. All posed in a portrait of Jewish pride and unity.

The Syrian military rushed in reinforcements Sunday to push back insurgents from advancing farther into the northern Hama countryside after they seized Aleppo and surrounding strategic locations in an adjacent province in a surprise offensive. The insurgents led by Hayat Tahrir al-Sham took over most of Aleppo on Saturday and claimed to have entered the city of Hama. There was no independent confirmation of their claim. Rebel commander Col. Hassan Abdulghani said separately the insurgents also took control of Sheikh Najjar, also known as the Aleppo Industrial City, northeast of the city, Aleppo’s military academy and the field artillery college to the southwest. Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi travels to Syrian capital Damascus later Sunday.
