Frustrated with a record number of people seeking asylum at the U.S.-Mexico border this spring, President Donald Trump at one point asked in a private meeting with close aides whether the U.S. could shoot migrants below the waist to slow them down.
According to two sources familiar with the matter, Trump in private meetings raised the prospect of shooting migrant families seeking asylum at the border as early as November 2018. He also floated a similar idea publicly at one point, suggesting that rocks thrown by migrants will be considered a firearm and potentially warrant lethal force.

A cure for diabetes is just a few years away, according to a group of Israeli scientists and researchers.
Betalin Therapeutics has developed what it calls “the world’s first Engineered Micro Pancreas (EMP),” using pig-lung tissue and insulin-secreting cells. The company aims to replace insulin-therapy by providing the body with a natural way to measure and regulate blood-sugar levels.
Animal trials have already been completed. Human trials are expected to begin next year.
Betalin Therapeutics Dr. Nikolai Kunicher told the Jerusalem Post that “today, you only have ways to manage the disease. This is a cure. The diabetic pancreas has lost the function of secreting insulin and we give it back. The patient should never have to inject insulin into his body again.”

Cory Booker’s campaign announced Tuesday that it raised $6 million in the third quarter of 2019, making this the best fundraising period yet for the New Jersey senator. The haul comes after his campaign implied last month that a fundraising shortfall would force Booker from the race.
On September 21, Booker’s campaign announced it needed to raise $1.7 million in the last ten days of the filing period in order to stay competitive and expand operations. At the time, Booker’s campaign manager, Addisu Demissie, told reporters that Booker would have no choice but to exit the race should they not reach their fundraising needs.

A New York City law has new guidance that states the use of the term “illegal alien” to “demean, humiliate or harass a person” is illegal, according to the New York City Commission on Human Rights.
The guidance “defines discrimination on the basis of perceived or actual immigration status and national origin under the New York City Human Rights Law in public accommodations, employment and housing.” It also includes the term “illegals.”
The guidance, announced Sept. 25, also states “harassing or discriminating against someone for their use of another language or their limited English proficiency, and threatening to call ICE on a person based on a discriminatory motive, are considered to be in violation” of the New York City Human Rights Law.

The Department of Justice (DOJ) on Wednesday intervened in President Trump’s lawsuit over New York prosecutors’ subpoena for his tax returns.
Government lawyers agreed with Trump’s personal lawyers that the case belongs in federal court and argued that Trump should receive temporary relief as needed.
“The United States participates now to explain why it is both correct and important that the President’s challenge to the subpoena on account of his office be resolved in federal court rather than in state court, and to support interim relief as necessary to allow for appropriate briefing of the weighty constitutional issues involved,” they wrote in a court filing in federal court in New York.

A decline in historical awareness alongside rising hate speech posted online were the two key factors behind an astonishing 107-percent rise in antisemitic offenses in Argentina during 2018, a top community official said on Wednesday.
“The main causes of these antisemitic reactions we believe have to do with the loss of collective memory, due to the increase in hate speech and anonymity in social networks,” Jorge Knoblovits — the president of DAIA, the umbrella group representing Argentina’s 180,000-strong Jewish community — remarked at a press conference in Buenos Aires.

Israeli startups raised $5.9 billion so far in 2019 and are on track to pass last year’s record-breaking figure of $6.4 billion, the Israeli business daily Globes reported on Wednesday.
Based on press releases from Israeli companies that have completed financing rounds, more than $1 billion was raised in September alone.
However, the true figure is likely even higher, as some companies do not reveal investment data, according to the report.
Israeli tech companies raised $650 million in July and $350 million in August, according to the IVC Research Center.
