Republican US presidential candidate Donald Trump remarked that it had been “a beautiful thing to watch” New York police officers conducting a raid on a Columbia University building occupied by anti-Israel demonstrators. He characterized the protesters as “raging lunatics and Hamas sympathizers.”
Speaking at a campaign rally in Wisconsin, Trump commended the police for their actions in arresting approximately 300 protesters.
“New York was under siege last night,” Trump said. “Your towns and villages will now be accepting people from Gaza and various other places.”
Trump referenced media reports suggesting that the Biden administration was considering plans to accept refugees from Gaza, implying that this decision would affect the communities of his supporters negatively. The crowd reacted with disapproval, booing.
According to CBS News, internal government documents revealed discussions among US officials regarding various options for resettling Palestinians displaced by the Gaza conflict, subject to stringent screening processes.
Earlier that day, White House press secretary Karine Jean-Pierre disclosed that the Biden administration was exploring the possibility of relocating certain Palestinian refugees with familial ties to Americans.
