According to a confidential International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) report seen by Reuters on Thursday, Iran has threatened the IAEA it plans on expanding it’s uranium enrichment capabilities by installing additional centrifuges at its Fordow and Natanz nuclear facilities, and activating machines recently installed there.
Following a resolution by the IAEA’s 35-nation board of governors criticizing Iran, Iran notified the IAEA of it’s intention to increase it’s nuclear capabilities, but has made little progress in doing so.
Today, Iran operates over 10,000 centrifuges at its underground nuclear sites in Natanz and Fordow, as well as an above-ground plant at Natanz.  According the report, Iran says it will install 32 groups of 174 centrifuges at each site, along with 1,152 advanced IR-6 centrifuges.
While the report delves into details about future centrifuge expansion, it does not mention Iran’s uranium enrichment levels, which at 60% purity, are close to the 90% purity needed for a nuclear weapon.  This omission could indicate Iran is signaling a desire to negotiate, as talks are scheduled to take place in Geneva on Friday with Germany, France, and the UK.
