Former New Jersey Governor Chris Christie expressed frustration on Sunday over recent drone sightings above his home and criticized Department of Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas for downplaying the issue.
Speaking about the mysterious drone activity reported across New Jersey, New York, and other areas, Christie attributed public anxiety to what he described as evasive responses from officials like Mayorkas.
“They’re not answering the questions,” Christie said during an appearance on ABC’s “This Week” with George Stephanopoulos.
Stephanopoulos noted that Mayorkas has stated his department “is monitoring it, they haven’t seen any unusual activity, and they need more authority” to disable drones when necessary.
While Christie agreed that Homeland Security needs stronger capabilities to address the situation, he strongly disagreed with Mayorkas’ assertion that the activity wasn’t out of the ordinary.
“To say this is not unusual activity, it’s just wrong!” Christie insisted. “I’ve lived in New Jersey my whole life. This is the first time that I’ve noticed drones over my house.”
Mayorkas Downplays Concerns, Cites FAA Rule Changes
Earlier on the same program, Mayorkas addressed the surge in drone sightings but appeared to minimize their significance. He told Stephanopoulos that “thousands of drones [are] flown every day in the United States.”
Mayorkas also pointed out that the Federal Aviation Administration updated its regulations in 2023, permitting drones to operate at night. This change, he said, could explain the increase in sightings after dark.
“That is the reality. But I want to assure the American public that we are on it. We are working in close coordination with state and local authorities,” Mayorkas said.
Christie Criticizes Lack of Information
Christie was unconvinced, saying that the vague explanations were fueling public confusion. He recounted how frustrated residents have approached him directly, seeking answers about the drones.
“I was in a restaurant in Monmouth County on Friday night. Had people at the bar coming up to me and saying, ‘Governor Murphy won’t tell me anything. The president won’t tell me anything,’ ” Christie said.
He emphasized that the absence of clear communication leaves space for misinformation to spread, warning that a lack of answers is only making matters worse.
“We’re used to having [information] so rapidly. If you don’t fill that vacuum, then all the conspiracy theories get filled in there,” Christie said.
Conspiracy Theories and Calls for Action
Christie also pointed to the speculation being fueled by officials’ silence, referencing Congressman Jeff Van Drew’s claim that the drones could be linked to an Iranian mothership stationed offshore.
Calling for greater transparency from both federal and state leaders, Christie urged them to take proactive steps to address public concerns.
“The Biden Administration and state authorities have to be more vocal and let people know exactly what they are doing,” Christie said.
