A Quaker organization has criticized the New York Times for rejecting an advertisement that accused Israel of committing genocide during the ongoing conflict with Hamas in Gaza.
The American Friends Service Committee explained that the proposed advertisement included the message: “Tell Congress to stop arming Israel’s genocide in Gaza now! As a Quaker organization, we work for peace. Join us. Tell the President and Congress to stop the killing and starvation in Gaza.”
In its response, the newspaper stated that it had rejected the ad because of “differing views on the situation.” The paper continued, explaining that it had to ensure advertising content met “widely applied definitions” in accordance with their standards of factual accuracy and legal compliance.
Despite the explanation, the organization’s general secretary expressed dissatisfaction with the response, accusing the New York Times of attempting to “sidestep the truth.”
Joyce Ajlouny, in a statement, declared: “Palestinians and allies have been silenced and marginalized in the media for decades as these institutions choose silence over accountability. It is only by challenging this reality that we can hope to forge a path toward a more just and equitable world.”
