Palestinian Authority chairman Mahmoud Abbas announced on Friday that the PA is ready to take on “full responsibility” for governing Gaza in the aftermath of the war.
This is the first time Abbas has spoken publicly following the declaration of a ceasefire in Gaza and the agreement for a hostage exchange between Israel and Hamas.
In a statement reported by AFP, the PA said, “The Palestinian government, under president Abbas’ directives, has completed all preparations to assume full responsibility in Gaza,” adding that these preparations include organizing the return of displaced individuals, overseeing border crossings, delivering vital services, and initiating the reconstruction of the heavily damaged region.
The Biden administration has encouraged the PA to assume a security role in Gaza following the conflict, citing their effectiveness and ability to prevent attacks on Israel.
However, Israeli Prime Minister Bibi Netanyahu has dismissed the notion of the PA taking control of Gaza immediately after the war.
