Google announced on Monday that it will rename the Gulf of Mexico to “Gulf of America” on its Google Maps platform, following updates from the Trump administration regarding “official government sources.”
Additionally, the company revealed that it would revert to using the name “Mount McKinley” for the Alaskan peak currently known as Denali.
This decision follows an executive order signed by President Donald Trump last week, which included directives to revise names on official maps and government communications.
“We’ve received a few questions about naming within Google Maps,” the company shared in a post on X. “We have a longstanding practice of applying name changes when they have been updated in official government sources.”
Google clarified that the name Gulf of Mexico will still be visible to users in Mexico, while people in other countries will see both names displayed, according to the company.
Trump expressed that he would reinstate the name Mount McKinley, citing former President William McKinley’s role in making the nation “very rich” through tariffs and talent.
The mountain was originally named Mount McKinley until 2015 when President Barack Obama’s administration changed it to Denali in an effort to honor Alaska Natives.
