The United States is expected to begin transferring migrants to a new detention facility at Guantanamo Bay, Cuba, within the next 30 days, according to a report from The Washington Post, which cited House border czar Tom Homan.
President Donald Trump first revealed the plan for the facility on Wednesday. Homan stated, “Hopefully within 30 days we’ll start moving people there,” in his comments to the newspaper.
Homan also mentioned that he plans to visit the U.S. naval base at Guantanamo Bay in the coming weeks to supervise the expedited construction of the facility.
While Trump had indicated that the facility could eventually house up to 30,000 migrants, Homan noted that the number would likely be much smaller initially, as reported by The Washington Post.
The U.S. naval base at Guantanamo Bay already hosts a migrant facility, which is separate from the high-security prison used to detain foreign terrorism suspects. This facility has been utilized intermittently over the years to detain Haitians and Cubans intercepted at sea.
