President Trump acknowledged that the tariffs he implemented on imports from Canada, Mexico, and China may result in some temporary difficulties, but he emphasized that the long-term benefits will outweigh any short-term challenges. “This will be the golden age of America! will there be some pain? Yes, maybe (and maybe not!). but we will make America great again, and it will all be worth the price that must be paid,” Trump, 78, wrote on Truth Social Sunday, using all capital letters.
“We are a country that is now being run with common sense — and the results will be spectacular!!!” he added, conveying his optimism about the future.
The previous year, Trump had issued warnings to China, Canada, and Mexico, urging them to take action against the fentanyl crisis or face the implementation of tariffs.
In addition, Trump instructed Canada and Mexico to take stronger measures to combat illegal immigration.
Canada, Mexico, and China are the three largest trading partners of the United States.
Trump had given them a deadline of yesterday to meet his demands, and after finding their responses lacking, he moved forward with his planned tariffs.
A longtime supporter of tariffs, Trump criticized those who opposed his decision, stating that the “tariff lobby” is “always wrong.” He accused advocates of free trade of allowing other countries to exploit the U.S. by permitting “crime, and poisonous drugs” to “freely flow into America.”
“Those days are over!” he declared.
