A recent CBS News/YouGov survey reveals that a record number of Americans approve of President Donald Trump’s performance just weeks into his second term in office. Despite criticism from Democrats regarding some of Trump’s Cabinet appointments and the creation of the Department of Government Efficiency, which focuses on reducing government size and spending, 53% of U.S. adults expressed approval of his overall job performance, according to the survey results released Sunday. This approval rating is the highest ever recorded in CBS News polling. In contrast, 47% of respondents disapprove of his actions.
The survey also shows that 51% of Americans believe that Elon Musk and his Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE) should have some degree of influence over government operations and spending, with 23% of those supporting significant influence from DOGE. On the issue of national security and addressing the migrant crisis that grew under former President Joe Biden, Trump’s efforts earned approval from 59% of Americans, while 41% disapproved.
Support for Trump’s plan to deploy U.S. troops to the southern border to halt illegal migration is even stronger, with 64% approving and 36% opposing. During the first week of Trump’s presidency, the Pentagon announced the deployment of around 1,500 troops to enforce his executive order on immigration.
The survey also explored public opinion on the creation of large detention centers for migrants, and Americans were nearly evenly split: 48% in favor and 52% opposed. However, Trump’s 2024 supporters showed strong backing for this proposal. When it comes to the ongoing Israel-Hamas war, 54% of Americans approve of Trump’s handling of the situation, while 46% disapprove.
Regarding Trump’s idea of the U.S. taking control of Gaza, the survey found limited support, with only 13% of respondents agreeing that it’s a good idea, 47% opposing it, and 40% unsure.
In terms of public perception of Trump, the CBS survey identified several key traits: 69% described him as “tough,” 63% as “energetic,” 60% as “focused,” and 58% as “effective.” Furthermore, 70% of Americans believe Trump has delivered on his campaign promises, while only 30% think his actions differ from what he promised.
However, there were concerns about Trump’s focus on economic issues, with 66% of Americans feeling that he is not paying enough attention to lowering prices. Although there is general support for tariffs on Chinese imports, the majority of respondents opposed tariffs on goods from Mexico, Europe, and Canada.
The survey, conducted from February 5 to 7, polled 2,175 U.S. adults who were representative of the national population based on gender, age, race, and education. The margin of error for the poll is plus or minus 2.5 percentage points.
