Kamala Harris, the former Vice President, made her first significant public appearance since leaving the White House, delivering a speech that subtly criticized both President Trump and tech entrepreneur Elon Musk.
While accepting the NAACP Chairman’s Award at the 56th annual NAACP Image Awards, Harris painted a grim picture of the nation’s current state, urging the audience to remain hopeful despite the internal struggles within her own party as Trump made his return to the political scene.
“While we have no illusions about what we are up against in this chapter in our American story, this chapter will be written not simply by whoever occupies the Oval Office nor by the wealthiest among us,” Harris, 60, stated in her all-black pantsuit during her speech.
“The American story will be written by you. Written by us. By we the people.”
Harris, who made history as the first Democratic presidential candidate to lose the popular vote since John Kerry two decades ago, trailed Trump by nearly 2.3 million votes, failing to win in any of the key swing states.
Since Trump’s official return to the White House last month, Harris has largely stayed out of the spotlight.
Unlike during Trump’s first term, Democrats are finding themselves demoralized, fragmented, and lacking energy as they attempt to contend with the president’s wave of executive orders, appointments, and Oval Office actions.
At the NAACP event, Harris urged those in attendance, as well as her supporters, not to lose faith.
“Some see the flames on our horizons, the rising waters in our cities, the shadows gathering over our democracy and ask, ‘What do we do now?’” Harris remarked.
“But we know exactly what to do, because we have done it before. And we will do it again. We use our power. We organize. We mobilize. We educate. We advocate. Our power has never come from having an easy path.”
Her speech came just hours after Trump energized the MAGA crowd at the Conservative Political Action Conference in Washington, D.C., where he took a jab at Harris.
“I haven’t said that name in a while, Kamala,” Trump joked at CPAC while discussing her role in addressing the causes of the border crisis. “I bet nobody knows her last name.”
Although she referenced these figures in her speech, Harris chose not to directly name Trump or Musk at the NAACP awards ceremony, which took place at the Pasadena Civic Auditorium in Los Angeles.
“This organization came into being at a moment when our country struggled with greed, bitterness and hatred,” she told the audience. “Those who carried its legacy forward had no illusions about the forces they were up against.”
Democratic leaders in Congress have tried to avoid responding to every move Trump makes, instead focusing their efforts on the middle class.
However, this has left many progressive activists feeling that the party’s leadership is lacking decisiveness, leading to complaints about a leadership void.
Following her election loss, Harris vowed not to “go quietly into the night.” Yet, she has remained largely out of the public eye, as her party searches for new leadership.
Last week, it was revealed that Harris, alongside former President Joe Biden, had signed with the Creative Artists Agency, a leading Hollywood talent agency.
