The Kremlin is expressing approval of President Donald Trump’s significant foreign policy shift, which moves towards fostering closer ties with Russia, following his public conflict with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky.
In a Monday interview with Russia 1, Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov remarked that the Trump administration is reshaping global political dynamics.
“The new administration is rapidly changing all foreign policy configurations,” Peskov stated in his conversation with a reporter from the program Moscow. Kremlin. Putin. “This largely coincides with our vision.”
Peskov also noted that a joint vote between the US and Russia at the United Nations would have been unthinkable in the past.
“There is a long way to go, because there is huge damage to the whole complex of bilateral relations,” he continued. “But if the political will of the two leaders, President Putin and President Trump, is maintained, this path can be quite quick and successful.”
In another interview with Krasnaya Zvezda, the Russian Defense Ministry’s media outlet, Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov praised Trump for his “pragmatic” efforts to resolve the three-year-long conflict that has caused the displacement of more than 6 million Ukrainians.
“His slogan is common sense. It means, as everyone can see, a shift to a different way of doing things,” Lavrov explained.
The remarks by these senior Russian officials come after a noticeable deterioration in Ukrainian-American relations, following an incident where Zelensky was asked to leave the White House early during a diplomatic visit to Washington.
Ahead of this failed meeting, Trump had used rhetoric typically associated with the Kremlin, going so far as to imply that Zelensky was a dictator lacking elections. He also suggested previously that Ukraine instigated the conflict with Russia after the latter’s borders were breached.
Zelensky has since shown a desire to mend the relationship between Washington and Kyiv, and he is reportedly preparing to sign the minerals agreement that was originally scheduled for Friday’s meeting.
“As regards salvaging the relationship, I think our relationship will continue,” Zelensky told reporters through a translator after attending a Sunday summit in London with other European leaders.
He also reaffirmed that Ukraine would not agree to any territorial concessions to Russia in exchange for peace.
