President Donald Trump shared that he plans to speak with Russian President Vladimir Putin this week, following Ukraine’s acceptance of a potential ceasefire agreement brokered by the United States, though its finalization is dependent on Russia’s agreement as well. Trump made these remarks to the press shortly after news emerged that Ukraine had agreed to the ceasefire, while he was at the White House inspecting Teslas with Elon Musk.
“Very importantly, and I said it, Ukraine: ceasefire…, just agreed to a little while ago. Now we have to go to Russia, and hopefully, President Putin will agree to that also, and we can get this show on the road,” Trump stated, with Musk and his son X standing alongside him.
Trump stressed his desire to end the conflict, noting the substantial loss of life on both sides of the war. “We want to get that war over with,” he declared, pointing out that each week, thousands of soldiers from Ukraine and Russia lose their lives, and civilians continue to perish, citing reports he regularly receives.
“I think it’s a big difference between the last visit you saw at the Oval Office and… that’s a total ceasefire. Ukraine has agreed to it, and hopefully, Russia will agree to it,” Trump continued. “We’re going to meet with them later on today and tomorrow, and hopefully, we’ll be able to wipe out a deal.”
The president also expressed confidence that his conversation with Putin could happen this week. “I’ll talk to Vladimir Putin, yeah,” Trump affirmed. “Look… it takes two to tango, as they say, so hopefully, he’ll also agree, and I really think that would be 75 percent of the way. The rest is getting it documented and, you know, negotiating land positions, etcetera.”
When pressed about the possibility of speaking with Putin “this week,” Trump replied, “I think so.”
Meanwhile, a statement released by the State Department and Ukraine’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs revealed that “Ukraine expressed readiness to accept the US proposal to enact an immediate, interim 30-day ceasefire” following a discussion between Ukrainian representatives, Secretary of State Marco Rubio, and National Security Advisor Mike Waltz in Saudi Arabia on Tuesday.
