President Donald Trump’s Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agency has detained roughly 33,000 illegal immigrants across the country—including thousands of gang members and individuals with ties to terrorism—since his inauguration on January 20.
During a media briefing on Wednesday, ICE officials reported that agents had taken approximately 33,000 illegal immigrants into custody between January 20 and March 10. This figure has already exceeded the total number of at-large arrests conducted under former President Joe Biden’s administration in Fiscal Year 2024.
These arrests, which occurred over a span of fewer than two months, also surpass the number of criminal illegal immigrants apprehended by ICE during Biden’s tenure in Fiscal Year 2024, when just 32,000 were detained.
Among those taken into custody, over 1,000 were believed to be affiliated with gangs—a significant increase from the 483 gang members arrested during the same period last year. Additionally, 39 individuals were suspected of having connections to terrorism.
An ICE official explained that these arrests were carried out through various enforcement mechanisms, including the 287(g) program, which allows local law enforcement agencies to collaborate with ICE in removing criminal illegal immigrants from their communities. Additional arrests were made through at-large enforcement actions and ICE’s Criminal Alien Program.
Last month, ICE officials disclosed that between January 20 and February 21 alone, the agency had already arrested over 20,000 illegal immigrants.
Officials also addressed the growing issue of detention space, noting that while Congress has funded approximately 47,000 beds to house illegal immigrants in ICE custody, the agency is currently operating at full capacity and requires additional resources.
“We are working with Congress to get more beds,” a senior ICE official stated, adding that the agency is aiming to significantly expand its detention capacity but requires additional financial support from lawmakers.
“Going forward, you’re going to see the bed space increase and releases go by the wayside,” the senior official continued, indicating that ICE plans to detain more individuals rather than releasing them due to space constraints.
One aspect that remains uncertain is the total number of deportations carried out since Trump assumed office in late January. When pressed for details, a senior ICE official stated that he did not have the figures readily available but emphasized that enforcement efforts are “stronger and higher than ever.”
