Senator Bernie Sanders, I-Vt., expressed concern that the United States has become a more perilous place to live since President Donald Trump took office and as wealthy business leaders like Tesla CEO Elon Musk have gained increasing political sway.
“These are, you know, the scariest times in my lifetime, that’s all,” Sanders remarked during an interview on Pod Save America. “I think that’s objectively the truth. You know, it is not just [that] they want to give tax breaks to billionaires and cut programs for working people. Frankly, that’s happened before.”
Sanders has frequently spoken out against the growing influence of Musk and other billionaires in Washington. Following Trump’s address to a joint session of Congress, Sanders argued that the administration is run entirely by the wealthiest elites.
“This is a government of the billionaire class by the billionaire class, and for the billionaire class,” Sanders said at the time.
According to Sanders, the real threat posed by Trump’s leadership lies in the consolidation of power among the country’s wealthiest figures.
“You combine that with Mr. Musk owning Twitter and able to send out his messages to hundreds of millions of people,” Sanders added.
He also pointed to Amazon founder Jeff Bezos, who he claimed is reshaping the media landscape to align with conservative ideology.
“You combine that with the fact that people like Bezos, the second-wealthiest person in the country, fired or got rid of most of his editorial staff and is going to convert them into a right-wing thing,” Sanders said. “Combine that with the fact that Trump is suing major media outlets and is threatening to investigate PBS and NPR.”
Beyond financial control, Sanders warned that the country is heading toward a more authoritarian system.
“So, it’s not only the power of money, it’s also combined with that — the movement towards authoritarianism,” he said.
The independent senator argued that Trump’s actions mark a dangerous departure from traditional American governance.
“When Trump unilaterally cuts federal funding that was passed by Congress that is illegal, that is unconstitutional,” he asserted.
Sanders further stressed that Trump is aggressively dismantling the foundations of the U.S. political system.
“He’s moving aggressively in all these areas,” he said, warning that Trump has already made strides in weakening the framework established by the nation’s Founding Fathers. “Yeah, there was gravity in my voice. This is a scary moment.”
