Ahmed Majdalani, a senior figure on the PLO Executive Committee, has announced that the Palestinian National Council (PNC), which acts as the legislative body of the PLO, will hold a meeting in April. The agenda for this session will include discussions on a potential resolution for the Gaza Strip, strengthening unity among Palestinians, and the establishment of a new role—Deputy Chair of the PLO Executive Committee.
Currently, the chairmanship of the PLO Executive Committee is held by Palestinian Authority (PA) President Mahmoud Abbas. The creation of this new position is seen as an indication of a potential successor to Abbas.
Yoni Ben-Menachema, a senior researcher at the Jerusalem Center for Public Affairs and an expert on Arab affairs, explains that a fierce internal battle is currently taking place behind the scenes over who will be appointed to this new position.
Ben-Menachema goes on to reveal that senior officials from the Fatah movement have disclosed that the United States is exerting significant pressure for the appointment of Majid Faraj, the head of PA Intelligence. Faraj, who has close ties with the CIA, is responsible for overseeing critical security cooperation between the PA and the American agency.
In an article for the Jerusalem Center, Ben-Menachema suggests that this move represents a pivotal moment for the PA, which is seeking to bolster its diplomatic standing in the wake of the Gaza war. After years of Mahmoud Abbas resisting calls for leadership reforms and a renewal of personnel, the PA is now being compelled to adapt to the evolving political landscape.
