Israeli Defense Minister Yisroel Katz has decided to prohibit former Defense Minister and IDF Chief of Staff Moshe (Bogie) Ya’alon from taking part in events held at IDF military bases. This decision comes after a formal request submitted by Itzik Bonzel, father of Sergeant Amit, together with the Im Tirtzu organization. In their petition, they expressed strong opposition to Ya’alon’s involvement in military events.
The petition cited several of Ya’alon’s controversial statements. Among these were accusations that IDF soldiers were committing ethnic cleansing in Gaza, calling the war “useless,” and expressing a desire that “Israel would not send soldiers to murder infants in Gaza.” Additionally, the petitioners highlighted another remark from Ya’alon in which he said, “If those responsible for the law have enacted illegal laws, it is our duty not to comply.” They also criticized the invitation for him to speak at an IDF event, arguing that his statements had been used by Israel’s adversaries to fuel antisemitic sentiment.
The petitioners urged Minister Katz to block Ya’alon’s participation in the military event, emphasizing that the military base in question is a government-controlled installation under the Ministry of Defense’s jurisdiction, rather than a private venue. In light of these concerns, Minister Katz has decided to grant the petition and prevent Ya’alon from attending official IDF events.
