On Thursday, Senator Bernie Sanders revealed that he plans to introduce resolutions next week that aim to halt $8.8 billion in arms sales to Israel, according to a report from Reuters.
The senator pointed to the deteriorating humanitarian conditions in Gaza, which have worsened since Israel’s military actions and its decision to halt aid shipments to the region. “(Prime Minister Bibi) Netanyahu has clearly violated US and international law in this brutal war, and we must end our complicity in the carnage,” Sanders stated.
“No humanitarian aid has entered Gaza in more than three and a half weeks since Israeli authorities announced a complete blockade—that’s no food, water, medicine, or fuel since the start of March,” he continued.
Although Sanders is pushing for these resolutions, it is highly unlikely they will succeed due to the historically strong bipartisan support for Israel in the US Congress. However, supporters of the resolutions hope that they will highlight the issue and push both Israel’s government and US leadership to take more substantial steps to protect civilians.
In November, the US Senate voted down a previous attempt by Sanders to block the sale of offensive weapons to Israel, citing concerns over the civilian toll in Gaza. The first resolution was rejected by a 79 to 18 vote, and the second resolution met a similar fate, though 19 lawmakers did support it.
