Four bystanders were shot dead in the last 18 months because of gang rivalries in upper Manhattan, authorities said Thursday as they announced the indictments of dozens of people in a yearslong welter of gunfire, robberies, weapons deals, car crashes and more. One shooting injured a woman who was eight months pregnant and was sitting in a parked car, police and prosecutors said. Another sent bullets flying into a crowded basketball court, where an onlooker was hit in the chest. Those victims survived. But four other bystanders, aged 44 to 66, did not. The violence “impacted the entire neighborhood — a climate of fear among ordinary residents,” Manhattan District Attorney Alvin Bragg said at a news conference.

By Rabbi Yair Hoffman It has all the hallmarks of an epidemic, spreading from school to school, from class to class, and from neighborhood to neighborhood.  It is plaguing ten year-old girls and even those as young as seven or eight. Yes, the S – Epidemic is here, and is causing major anxieties in the neshamos of our precious young girls. It is a battle for the very Neshama of our children and their emotional well-being. It is clear as day that young girls do not need to spend time, money, and emotional energy and angst on makeup or skincare products at their age.

Chair Jerome Powell said Thursday that the Federal Reserve will likely cut its key interest rate slowly and deliberately in the coming months, in part because inflation has shown signs of persistence and the Fed’s officials want to see where it heads next. Powell, speaking in Dallas, said that inflation is edging closer to the central bank’s 2% target, “but it is not there yet.” At the same time, he said, the economy is strong, and the policymakers can take time to monitor the path of inflation. “The economy is not sending any signals that we need to be in a hurry to lower rates,” the Fed chair said.

President-elect Donald Trump has chosen Todd Blanche, an attorney who led the legal team that defended the Republican at his hush money criminal trial, to serve as the second-highest ranking Justice Department official. A former federal prosecutor, Blanche has been a key figure on Trump’s defense team both in the New York case that ended in a conviction in May, and the federal cases brought by Justice Department special counsel Jack Smith. “Todd is an excellent attorney who will be a crucial leader in the Justice Department, fixing what has been a broken System of Justice for far too long,” Trump said in a statement Thursday announcing his pick.

Boruch Hashem, we have the zchus to have the Rosh Yeshiva, Rav Olshin shlita in our midst who gives remarkable Vaadim.   Rephrased with headings by Rabbi Yair Hoffman The Torah particularly focuses on Avrohom Avinu’s chesed with the three angels in this week’s parsha. The significance of this specific act is emphasized by the rewards his descendants received generations later. As the Midrash tells us, because Avrohom Avinu gave water to his guests, Klal Yisroel received the well in the desert. Because he told them to rest under a tree, they received the Clouds of Glory. Because he served them bread, they received the manna. And because he served them meat, they received the slav (quail).

Two lawyers say they can no longer represent Rudy Giuliani in a legal fight over property he’s been ordered to give up to satisfy part of a $148 million defamation judgment against him. They asked a judge to remove them from the case, citing disagreements with the former New York City mayor. The request in federal court comes a week after a judge ordered Giuliani to turn over by Friday a Mercedes that once belonged to actress Lauren Bacall, an heirloom watch and other prized assets to two former Georgia election workers who sued him over his remarks about them as he fought to overturn President-elect Donald Trump’s 2020 election loss. The women were awarded the judgment last year.

Ford Motor Co. will pay a penalty of up to $165 million to the U.S. government for moving too slowly on a recall and failing to give accurate recall information. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration said Thursday that the civil penalty is the second-largest in its 54-year history. Only the fine Takata paid for faulty air bag inflators was higher. The agency said Ford was too slow to recall vehicles with faulty rearview cameras, and it failed to give the agency complete information, which is required by the Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Act. Ford agreed to a consent order with the agency that includes a payment of $65 million, and $45 million in spending to comply with the law. Another $55 million will be deferred.

A French military task force with a festive name — “Champagne” — is wrapping up a mission that’s no party: training a whole new brigade of several thousand Ukrainian troops who will be joining the fight against Russia’s invasion armed with France-supplied tanks, artillery canons and other heavy weaponry. The approaching return to Ukraine of the “Anne of Kyiv” brigade, after more than two months of intense military training in eastern and southern France, comes at another critical juncture in the almost three-year war. Russian forces are driving westward in an effort to capture all of Ukraine’s eastern Donbas region.
