The Hope Medical Group for Women in northern Louisiana fields phone calls every day from anxious pregnant women who ask if abortion is still legal and if the clinic, one of only three that provides abortions in the state, is still open. Despite the protesters who sometimes gather outside, the threats that forced the clinic to board up all the windows and the repeated restrictions put upon abortion providers in this staunchly anti-abortion state, the clinic stands. Abortion remains legal in Louisiana and elsewhere in the United States. But a Supreme Court case set for arguments Wednesday could lead to the clinic’s closure and, more fundamentally, a retreat from protecting the right to abortion that the high court first announced in 1973.

New York leaders sought to calm jittery nerves Monday after the city recorded its first confirmed case of the new coronavirus, saying the disease — while dangerous — is a manageable threat. The state is raising its testing capacity and telling people to expect the smell of bleach from cleaning in public areas, including subways, all while underscoring that the diagnosed woman’s symptoms are so mild that she can recover at home, not in a hospital. “In this situation, the facts defeat fear. Because the reality is reassuring. It is deep-breath time,” Gov. Andrew Cuomo said.

Moments before Mike Bloomberg stood in the pulpit of Brown Chapel AME Church, the pastor noted that the former New York mayor initially declined an invitation to speak at the church where, 55 years ago, civil rights activists prepared for the historic march to Montgomery. The pastor praised Bloomberg’s change of heart, but the Democratic presidential candidate struggled to win over his audience. Multiple parishioners stood and turned their backs to him. A short time later, the church erupted in cheers when former Vice President Joe Biden — fresh off his victory in the South Carolina primary — strode into the sanctuary and sat behind the pulpit.

Minnesota Sen. Amy Klobuchar ended her Democratic presidential campaign on Monday and plans to endorse rival Joe Biden in an effort to unify moderate voters behind the former vice president’s White House bid. She is flying to Dallas and plans to join Biden at his rally Monday night, according to her campaign. Klobuchar was the second presidential candidate to exit the race in less than 24 hours, following Pete Buttigieg’s departure late Sunday. Their decisions reflect an urgent push among moderates to consolidate behind Biden as a counter to progressive rival Bernie Sanders. Klobuchar outlasted several better-known and better-funded Democrats, thanks to a better-than-expected third-place finish in in New Hampshire.

Hagaon Rosh Yeshivah Harav Gershon Edelstein who has never before been seen crying in public, bursts into tears on Monday as he was reciting tehillim in his home for the elections, B’Chadrei Chareidim reported. Harav Edelstein’s family members and his close students gathered at his home in Bnei Brak on Monday afternoon to say tehillim for a successful outcome to the elections for the 23rd Knesset. The Rosh Yeshivah, who is known for his self-restrained demeanor, always keeping his inner emotions in check, suddenly began to cry and tears rolled down his face. Afterward, the Rosh Yeshivah lifted his hands to cover his face and continued to recite Tehillim.

This year, more than ever before, with the current difficult matzav for acheinu b’nei yisroel in general and B’nei Torah in particular, there is just so much negativity worldwide. We now have a unique opportunity to portray a beautiful and positive message about our simchas Purim. The zechus of the special simcha emanating from torah learning on the Yom tov of Simcha should encapsulate your life with all the brochos of Simcha! Eleven years ago on Purim night a mini-revolution happened that addresses this issue. A group of very special Baalei Battim sponsored 23 bochurim from Yeshiva Torah Temimah in Brooklyn, NY to sit and learn for two hours on Purim night. Each bochur received a $250 credit to a tzedokah of his choice.

A new virus first detected in China has infected more than 89,000 people globally and caused over 3,000 deaths. The World Health Organization has named the illness COVID-19, referring to its origin late last year and the coronavirus that causes it.

Another five Israelis were diagnosed with the COVID-19 coronavirus this week, bringing the total number of confirmed cases in Israel to 12, the Health Ministry stated on Monday. One Israeli diagnosed on Monday is a Ramat Gan resident who returned from Italy on February 25 and the second Israei is an Ashdod resident who returned from Italy on February 26. Two of the three Israelis diagnosed with the virus on Sunday are members of one family, residents of southern Israel, who returned from Italy on El Al Flight LY290 on Thursday, February 27 at 2:30 p.m. The Health Ministry has instructed all other passengers on the flight to self-quarantine.
