Israel Police have been conducting a new investigation against Health Minister Yaakov Litzman (UTJ) in the past two months, a Kan 11 news report stated on Motzei Shabbos. According to the report, the investigation is being conducted against Litzman and other figures for suspected fraud and breach of trust. The report added that the police wanted to initiate an investigation four months ago, but Attorney General Avichai Mandelblit only gave his approval to the anti-corruption unit Lahav 433 to begin an investigation two months ago. If the investigation corroborates the suspicions against Litzman, the Attorney General’s decision about two other cases against Litzman may be delayed.

The chairman of the Senate Judiciary Committee, a close ally of President Donald Trump, said Sunday that the Justice Department has established a way to review information gathered in Ukraine by Trump personal lawyer Rudy Giuliani, who has targeted Democrat Joe Biden and his son. Sen. Lindsey Graham, R-S.C., said Attorney General William Barr told him during a conversation Sunday that the department has “created a process that Rudy could give information and they would see if it’s verified.” “Rudy Giuliani is a well-known man,” said Graham. “He’s a crime fighter. He’s loyal to the president. He’s a good lawyer.” Giuliani is also under scrutiny by federal authorities.

China’s virus death toll rose by 89 on Sunday to 811, passing the number of fatalities in the 2002-2003 SARS epidemic, but fewer new cases were reported in a possible sign its spread may be slowing as other nations stepped up efforts to block the disease. Some 2,656 new virus cases were reported in the 24 hours ending at midnight Saturday, most of them in the central province of Hubei, where the first patients fell sick in December. That was down by about 20% from the 3,399 new cases reported in the previous 24-hour period. “That means the joint control mechanism of different regions and the strict prevention and control measures have worked,” a spokesman for the National Health Commission, Mi Feng, said at a news conference.

Storm Ciara battered the U.K. and northern Europe with hurricane-force winds and heavy rains Sunday, halting flights and trains and producing heaving seas that closed down ports. Soccer games, farmers’ markets and cultural events were canceled as authorities urged millions of people to stay indoors, away from falling tree branches. Named by the U.K. Met Office weather agency, the storm brought massive gusts that hit 93 mph (150 mph) at the northern Welsh village of Aberdaron and 86 mph (138 kph) at the Welsh town of Capel Curig. A British Airways plane is thought to have made the fastest ever flight by a conventional airliner from New York to London.

Joe Biden is facing increasingly formidable competition in South Carolina, a state his campaign has long assumed was safely in his column and one he’s repeatedly described as a “firewall” in his bid for the Democratic presidential nomination. Vermont Sen. Bernie Sanders and billionaire activist Tom Steyer are challenging the former vice president’s standing in South Carolina. The Feb. 29 primary is the first contest in the South on the 2020 election calendar and serves as an important gauge of black support. Sanders has generated enthusiasm from younger black voters in South Carolina. That could help him avoid a repeat of his dismal showing in the 2016 primary, when African Americans overwhelmingly backed Hillary Clinton.

An Iranian rocket failed to put a satellite into orbit on Sunday, state television reported, the latest setback for a program the U.S. claims helps Tehran advance its ballistic missile program. The launch happened at 7:15 p.m. local time at Imam Khomeini Spaceport in Iran’s Semnan province, some 230 kilometers (145 miles) southeast of Iran’s capital, Tehran. A Simorgh, or “Phoenix,” rocket couldn’t put the Zafar 1 communications satellite into orbit, however, due to a low speed, Iranian state TV reported.

(By Rabbi Yair Hoffman for 5TJT.com) Tu B’Shvat is tonight, but the dramatic change in how we commemorate it happened in the 17th century. Tu B’Shvat underwent a metamorphosis because of the publication of a new mystical and kabbalistic work. The work was called Chemdas Yamim and its origins are somewhat obscure. It was printed anonymously and it was the publication of this Sefer that caused the Tu B’Shvat revolution. [By the way, according to Rav Yisroel Belsky zt”l, it is pronounced Tu B’shvat where the shva is a short e sound as in the first e in the word “between” rather than as an i as in “bitcoin.”] HISTORICALLY Most people knew (and still know) very little about Tu B’Shvat. We knew it as the Rosh HaShana for trees.

A man carrying a knife was arrested outside the White House after he told a U.S. Secret Service officer that he was there to kill the president, police said. Roger Hedgpeth, 25, was arrested Saturday afternoon on a charge of making threats to do bodily harm, the Metropolitan Police Department said. Hedgpeth approached a Secret Service officer who was patrolling outside the White House and said he was there to “assassinate” President Donald Trump and “I have a knife to do it with,” according to a police report obtained by The Associated Press. Police found a 3 1/2-inch knife in a sheath on his left hip, and Hedgpeth also had an empty pistol holster on his right hip, authorities said. Hedgpeth was taken into custody and brought to a hospital for a mental health evaluation, police said.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=b2BIvV68-ZI Following the success of our first cohort, we have now opened applications for our second cycle.  An eighteen month high-calibre training programme dedicated to mentoring a next generation of community and outreach rabbonim. In an ever-changing world, we want our rabbonim to understand the significant challenges that await them and learn how to respond in a wise, Torah-true way.  Our doctors have extensive on-the-job training, so should our rabbis. We are currently open for applications for our second cohort, starting in September 2020 in London.
