Top US infectious disease doctor Anthony Fauci said today “I’m almost certain it will come back” when he was asked about the possibility of a second wave of Covid-19 hitting later this year. “In my mind, it’s inevitable that we will have a return of the virus,” Fauci said while speaking to the Economic Club of Washington on a Zoom call. He said that the virus has “globally spread” — noting that we are starting to see cases in parts of Southern Africa. “It’s not going to disappear from the planet,” he said. Fauci said that if the virus returns later this year, “how we handle it…will determine our fate.” He said that if “countermeasures” that are being discussed are executed, “we should do reasonably well,” otherwise the country could see a “bad fall” and “bad winter.” (Source: CNN)

The U.S. Census Bureau’s return to field operations for the 2020 national head count will take place in phases based on a region’s lockdown orders and the availability of protective gear against the new coronavirus, bureau officials told lawmakers late last week. Census Bureau officials told members of the House Committee on Oversight and Reform last Friday that there would be a phased start to the resumption of field operations on June 1. The spreading virus, and subsequent stay-at-home orders, forced the bureau in mid-March to halt field operations such as hiring and training, reaching out to college students in off-campus housing and dropping off paper questionnaires to households without traditional addresses.

With far fewer people flying because of travel restrictions during the coronavirus pandemic, airport security screeners are naturally finding fewer guns in carry-on baggage. But the ratio of guns to passengers seeking to board airplanes has jumped sharply. The Transportation Security Administration said Monday that it found 58 guns at checkpoints from March 22 to April 22, compared with 346 guns over the same stretch last year. Adjusting for the 95% drop in travelers, that means TSA screeners found one gun for every 80,000 people screened — or 2.7 times the rate of a year ago, when they found one gun for every 216,200 people. TSA declined to offer an explanation or theory about why the rate of finding guns has gone up this spring.

Rabbi Moshe Sheinfeld is a Rav who serves in Kaunas (formerly Kovno), Lithuania, a city that has a glorious Jewish past which was sadly wiped out during the Holocaust. Today there are very few local Jews but there is a community of about 400 Jewish medical students, most of them Israelis. Rav Zev (Willie) Stern, z’l of London, a renowned supporter of Torah and yeshivos who passed away last month due to the coronavirus, established and funded a Jewish center, The Jewish Center of Kaunas. The Center serves the Jewish students, providing amenities such as kosher food, a shul and Torah shiurim, helping to decrease the risk of the students succumbing to assimilation and intermarriage. Rav Sheinfeld and his wife have run the center for eight years.

A Channel 12 News report said on Monday that Kupat Cholim Leumit health officials refused to transfer the now critically ill 11-year-old from the “coronavirus hotel” to the hospital for days despite her high fever, giving her medication instead. “We complained over and over that her condition was deteriorating, but they wouldn’t agree to move her,” a source at the hotel said. The girl, who is from the city of Elad, was only transferred to the hospital after the IDF’s Home Front Command, which is running the “coronavirus hotels” applied heavy pressure on Leumit. The girl was transferred to Poriya Hospital in Tiveria but when her condition worsened she was taken to Rambam Hospital in Haifa.
