Danish police arrested about 20 people on Wednesday after carrying out raids throughout the country to thwart what they suspected were preparations for an Islamist militant attack, police and security officials said.
The detainees had tried to obtain explosives and firearms, police said.
The raids were mounted on the suspicion that several people had been planning an attack, the Danish intelligence service said in a news conference with police.
“It is our assessment, that those people are driven by a militant, Islamist motive,” operational chief of the intelligence service, Flemming Drejer, said.
Police did not give a precise number for the arrests.

Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu launched a direct warning to Lebanese Hezbollah terror group after its chief Hassan Nasrallah had threatened Israel over the weekend, Hebrew media reported on Sunday.
“A senior in the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) threatened Iran would destroy Tel Aviv from Lebanon and exposed a truth — that Hezbollah is a proxy arm of Iran in Lebanon,” Netanyahu said during a security Cabinet meeting in Jerusalem.
“Nasrallah denied it, but I wish to clarify: If Hezbollah will dare attack Israel, the organization and the State of Lebanon — which allows attacks from its territory toward us — will pay a heavy price.”

A senior Hamas leader warned on Saturday that his organization will “draw new equations” if Israel does not ease restrictions on the crossings into the Gaza Strip.
At an event in Gaza marking 32 years since the formation of the terrorist entity and attended by tens of thousands, senior Hamas political leader Osama al-Mazini said: “The enemy must understand that we will draw new equations if the siege is not lifted.”
The crossings between Gaza and Israel have been under tight Israeli control since Hamas seized power in 2007, however, the coastal territory also shares a border with Egypt.
Israel has argued that Hamas engages in numerous illegal imports, including of illicit weapons and bomb-making equipment, which necessitates strict supervision of the crossings.
