On Sunday, the newly-established Human Care Services (HCS) summer camp for children with special needs in Fallsburg was the site of a vibrant and heartwarming event. The camp’s grounds, formerly the Raleigh Hotel, buzzed with excitement as Sullivan County’s Sheriff, Undersheriff, and several local elected officials arrived to celebrate this remarkable initiative. The occasion was highlighted by the playing of the national anthem and an enthusiastic welcome for the dignitaries, setting a festive tone. Sheriff Mike Schiff and Undersheriff Eric Chaboty were greeted with heartfelt songs from the campers, underscoring the spirit of the day. They were joined by Sullivan County legislators Joe Perrello and Amanda Ward, as well as Fallsburg Town Supervisor Mike Bensimon.

The Catskills Hatzalah’s Search and Rescue Team, along with their Drone Team, recently completed an advanced training exercise in collaboration with multiple agencies, showcasing their coordinated efforts and expertise. Participating in the exercise were the New York State Police, including their Bureau of Criminal Investigations (BCI), Special Operations Response Team (SORT), Aviation Unit, Underwater Recovery Team Divers, and UAV/Drone Team. Also involved were the New York State DEC Police, New York State Forest Rangers, New York State Park Police, New York State Park Rangers, and New York State OEM.

Emergency personal were on the scene of a working structure fire in Woodridge, Friday afternoon, CATSKILL SCOOP REPORTED. The fire department was on the scene at around 1:30PM, with a fire in a bungalow at “Highland Park” located at 104 Highland Avenue. It quicky went to a Second Alarm response, with numerous fire departments responding for mutual aid requests. Travelers headed for the Catskills will have to reprogram their GPS this summer for a new “Expanded” Mincha location, as the New York State Thruway’s Sloatsburg rest stop is still undergoing renovations. Under an agreement reached with the owners of the famous “Marketplace Mall” in the Village of Spring Valley, NY, off Exit 14 on the NY State Thruway South, the Mincha Area will open for the season on June 27 at 1 Spring Valley Market Place, Spring Valley, NY, just a minute’s drive from the exit. The location is situated in an expanded tent in the parking lot. Chaverim of Rockland will be on hand every Thursday night over the nine-week summer season to manage parking and ensure the area’s security and upkeep.

On Sunday, three prominent Jewish community activists, Abe Rosenberg, Abe Rutner – both leaders of the Sullivan County JCC, along with Jewish community activist Chaskel Bennet, met with Speaker of the House Mike Johnson and Rep. Marc Molinaro in Manhattan. The activists spoke with the officials about security issues and concerns for the Catskills where hundreds of thousands of Orthodox Jews will be passing though during summer 2024. Rep. Molinaro pledged to ensure he would do all he could to ensure a safe summer season, and stated how he is in close contact with law enforcement officials such as Sullivan County Sheriff Mike Schiff, and Undersheriff Eric Chaboty. Catskills Hatzalah has upgraded its emergency response capabilities, announcing the addition of two state-of-the-art ambulances, Catskill Scoop reported. The new vehicles, funded through the efforts of Assemblywoman Aileene Gunther, will provide critical medical transportation services to the growing community in Bloomingburg and along the busy Route 17 corridor. A ribbon-cutting ceremony was held at the Catskills Hatzalah headquarters in Fallsburg, NY, to mark the arrival of the new ambulances. Assemblywoman Gunther was presented with a plaque in recognition of her tireless efforts in securing the funding for these vital additions to the Hatzalah fleet.

Legendary askan and New York State Police Chaplain Rabbi Berish Freilich has facilitated the assembly of a Sukkah on the I-87, providing a major benefit to families traveling between New York and Canada on Chol Hamoed Sukkos. The Sukkah, located at the rest area in Clifton Park on the I-87 northbound, is right next to the State Police barracks. Men will be able to eat in the Sukkah, while women and children can eat inside, with rest stop employees ensuring that the Sukkah will remain clean. Additionally, there is a separate sink for men to wash, as well as many minyanim for mincha and maariv. With this year’s long chol hamoed, numerous families are expected to make the 7.5-hour journey between New York and Montreal, Canada.

An explosion at a two-story townhouse in the Patio Homes development located at 15 James Place in Kiamesha Lake has left two children and one adult seriously injured. The explosion took place around 12:30 p.m. on Shabbos and seems to have been caused by a propane leak. Monticello Fire Department responded to the scene. A charter bus carrying high school students to a band camp hurtled off a New York highway and down an embankment Thursday, killing one person and hurting dozens of others, officials said. The wreck happened in the early afternoon on Interstate 84 in the town of Wawayanda, about 45 miles northwest of New York City, state police said. Forty-three people were taken to hospitals, county fire officials said on social media. At least five people were badly hurt, Orange County Executive Steve Neuhaus told WNBC-TV. News footage showed ripped-up grass on the embankment and the bus lying on its left side with its roof warped. A ladder allowed rescuers to reach the windows.
