Two IDF soldiers who heated hot dogs in an army kitchen on Shabbos were recently imprisoned for 20 days. The offenders attempted to deny the wrongdoing but were contradicted by a soldier who entered the kitchen and reported them.
Kashrus at army bases is often at the mercy of non-observant soldiers who can venture into kitchens contrary to regulations.
Kitchens are locked every night to prevent soldiers from mixing dairy with meat or cooking food from home. But with hundreds or thousands of irreligious personnel roaming everywhere, it is difficult to enforce the rules.

An unusual wedding took place in Bnei Brak as the brilliant Chaim Sternhel, a Bobov-45 chossid, married the granddaughter of Rav Chaim Greinemann, author of the Chiddushim Ubiurim, a nephew of the Chazon Ish.
The story began when the chosson was studying in Boro Park and discovered the seforim of the Chazon Ish. This kindled a thirst to meet his talmidim.
When the chosson began studying at a yeshiva in Yerushalayim, he noticed the sefer Yeshuos Kohen authored by Rav Yehoshua Adler from Bnei Brak, a talmid of Rav Chaim Greinemann.

Rav Yisroel Alter, the Beis Yisroel, became the Rebbe of Gur at a time of deep darkness. Just a few years earlier, tens of thousands of Gerrer chassidim had perished in the Holocaust, and the few who’d survived faced the daunting challenge of beginning new lives.
Rav Yisroel became the Rebbe – and he rebuilt a world, miraculously leading Gerrer chassidus to almost unimaginable levels of greatness.
At the same time he was a loving, empathetic, wise shepherd, gently and patiently giving people the time and space they needed to grow.

Hidden Hazards: Chometz In Disguise
“What can be wrong with…?” That’s a question that is fairly common when it comes to kashrus. But when it comes to Pesach, the answer to that question changes drastically. Let’s listen in to Rabbi Avraham Juravel who is a Rabbinic Coordinator at the OU, as well as being in charge of their ingredient division, who explains in great detail what can be wrong with seemingly innocuous products.

New York City Mayor Eric Adams initiated steps on Thursday to introduce gun detection technology in the subway system, aiming to bolster security in one of the globe’s largest public transit networks.
The deployment of these devices, commonly utilized in arenas and cultural institutions throughout the city, is pending a mandatory 90-day probation period, a prerequisite for all new law enforcement technologies.
This decision comes on the heels of a widely circulated video capturing a subway shooting earlier in the month. It underscores Adams’ proactive approach to address crime concerns amid declining public confidence.

The reasons that Chareidi Jews—whether of Lithuanian or Sephardic origins, or Chassidim—tended to vaccinate at lower rates for COVID-19 than the rest of the Israeli population “are not religious-framed but more related to lack of knowledge, fears, trust and logistics,” according to new research from Hebrew University scholars.
Writing on March 26 in the Journal of Religion and Health, Miriam Schiff and Nitzan Sharon-Lavi—both of the Hebrew University of Jerusalem’s social work and social welfare school—noted that Chareidi Israelis had the country’s highest rate of COVID infection and the nation’s lowest vaccination rates.

The Chairman of Israel’s Finance Committee, MK Moshe Gafni of United Torah Judaism, addressed the enlistment of charedi yeshiva students during a discussion on Thursday.
At the cornerstone-laying ceremony for a new charedi school, Gafni emphasized, “The presence of Torah scholars is indispensable for our existence in this land.”
He highlighted the historical context, noting, “After two millennia of dispersion, the Jewish people have reclaimed their status as a nation in their ancestral homeland, largely due to the dedication of Torah scholars who uphold our heritage.”

Israel’s Supreme Court on Thursday issued an interim order prohibiting the government from providing stipends to some chareidi men who do not serve in the Israel Defense Forces.
Yeshivah students who did not obtain a military service deferral and who have failed to report for IDF service since July 1, 2023, will now be ineligible for the monthly financial stipends, according to the ruling.
The Supreme Court, sitting as the High Court of Justice, also decided that an extended panel of nine justices will hear petitions demanding a universal military draft starting in May.
Earlier on Thursday, Prime Minister Bibi Netanyahu wrote to the court asking for another extension—this time for 30 days—so he could reach a political agreement regulating the chareidi IDF draft.

Yoil Weingarten, Yakov Weingarten, and Shmiel Weingarten, leaders of Lev Tahor, an extremist radical sect based in Guatemala comprised of Jews who dress like Orthodox Jews, have been found guilty of kidnapping a 12-year-old boy and a 14-year-old girl and transporting the 14-year-old girl outside the United States to continue an inappropriate relationship with her adult male ‘husband.’
With this verdict, all nine Lev Tahor leaders and operatives charged for these heinous crimes have been held accountable.

Agudath Israel of America notes with sadness the passing of Joseph “Joe” Lieberman, former senator from Connecticut and vice-presidential nominee, at the age of 82.
Joe Lieberman, an Orthodox Jew himself, was a friend of Agudath Israel and the Orthodox Jewish community, participating in Agudath Israel events and championing the needs of the community.
Senator Lieberman, dubbed the “conscience of the Senate,” was a strong supporter of Israel, and worked to ensure its security both during and after his tenure as senator.
