Mike Lawler, a New York Republican previously little known outside his district, has defeated one of the country’s top Democrats for a seat in the U.S. House of Representatives. A spokesperson for Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee Chairman Rep. Sean Patrick Maloney said Maloney conceded the race for New York’s 17th District via phone call earlier in the day. “I don’t like to lose, but my opponent won this race and he won it fair and square,” Maloney said at a news conference in Washington. “And that means something. So I’m going to step aside. And I had a good run.” Maloney’s concession makes him the first head of a congressional campaign committee to lose his own seat since 1992.

A group of more than two dozen famed askanim from the Monsey area have come together to endorse Mike Lawler as he challenges Rep. Sean Patrick Maloney for the NY-17 seat in the House of Representatives.

Both candidates running for Congress in NY 17 the NYS Senate district 38 visited visited the Yeshiva Association of Rockland County (YARC) at the offices of Community Outreach Center under the leadership of Rabbi Hersh Horowitz. Each candidate had a chance to meet with the principals of the local Yeshivas. Rabbi Horowitz first introduced incumbent Democrat Congressman Maloney and thanked him for “all that he has done for our greater community” and he pointed out that no matter the issue, big or small the congressman and his staff have always been accessible and responsive. He also commended the congressman for his role and leadership with piduon shvuim.

East Ramapo School Board President Shimon Rose, who has in recent years become a household name in local politics and earned himself a reputation for tirelessly serving the Monsey community on the School Board, is throwing his hat in the ring to serve as the County Legislator for the new 15th County District representing the Chestnut Ridge and Airmont neighborhoods. Among the changes made in the county’s most recent redistricting is a new district that will include all of Chestnut Ridge and the nearly all of Airmont. Today, the first step was taken to ensure that the community is well represented in this vital position.

With Election Day just a week away, Republican gubernatorial candidate Rep. Lee Zeldin, NY-17 Congressional candidate Mike Lawler, and former NY Gov. George Pataki, met with various leading rabbanim and askonim in the Monsey area today. The meetings began this morning at the home of of Rav Mordche Steiner shlit”a, one of the foremost rabbanim in Monsey, followed by a visit to Rav Chaim Shia Halberstam shlit”a, rav of the Satmar Williamsburg kehilla in Monsey. Former Gov. Pataki noted during this first meeting that since leaving office, he has never campaigned for other Republican candidates in the state, but he is now campaigning for Lee Zeldin because he believes in him and is confident he can win.

Congressman Sean Patrick Maloney met with leading rabbonim of the community in Monsey, on Monday, amongst them HaRav Chaim Shia Halberstam of the Satmar community, the Pupa Rov, HaRav Wosner of the Satmar community and the Belzer Dayan. They all expressed their upmost appreciation to Congressman Maloney for what he has done for the Orthodox Jewish community over the past decade. The Congressman was accompanied at some of the meetings with Rabbi Moshe Margaretten of the Tzedek Association. Rabbi Margaretten passionately expressed the numerous times that Congressman Maloney lead the effort to free individuals with excessive sentences from prison.

YWN regrets to inform you of the petirah of R’ Alexander Zisha Rosenblum z”l, who was critically injured in a horrific accident on the Palisades Parkway in 2016 as he returned home from being a “tantzer” at a wedding in Monsey. The niftar and several other “tantzers” were heading to Boro Park late on the night of November 4th, 2016, when a deer ran in front of the minivan they were in at around Exit 11. The driver swerved to avoid the deer and lost control of the vehicle, resulting in it crashing into a tree. Everyone in the vehicle was injured, some to a lesser extent, and one in critical condition. R’ Alexander Zisha z”l tragically never recovered from his injuries.

A bochur from Lakewood was rescued by a joint operation between Hatzolah and Chaverim of Rockland County after sustaining serious injuries during a hike in the Sloatsburg area last week. The bochur, Yosef ben Rivka Tzirel, was hiking with another boy from Monsey when he fell from a great height – reportedly 20-30 feet – and sustained serious injuries, particularly to his face. The bochur he was with immediately contacted Hatzolah and Chaverim of Rockland County. Both Hatzolah and Chaverim of Rockland County members were at the scene within minutes of dispatch, and several Chaverim teams climbed the mountain with a specialized stretcher to extricate hikers.

In events dominated by the pressing issue of New York State’s wishes to impose new requirements on Yeshivos and Bais Yaakovs, GOP gubernatorial candidate Rep. Lee Zeldin on Tuesday visited various frum institutions and businesses. Zeldin was joined on his excursions by Republican Assemblyman and NY-17 candidate Mike Lawler, as well as OJPAC founder Yossi Gestetner.
