Riders who don’t wear face coverings on subways, buses and commuter rails will soon face a $50 fine, the MTA said Thursday. The mandatory mask rule will apply to all riders on subways, buses, Metro-North and Long Island Rail Road and will take effect on Monday, Sept. 14, MTA chairman Pat Foye said Thursday. Amazon is on a hiring spree. In the latest sign of how it’s prospering while others are faltering during the pandemic, Amazon said Wednesday it is seeking to bring aboard 33,000 people for corporate and tech roles in the next few months. It’s the largest number of job openings it’s had at one time, and the Seattle-based online behemoth said the hiring is not related to the jobs it typically offers ahead of the busy holiday shopping season. Amazon can afford to grow its workforce: It is one of the few companies that has thrived during the coronavirus outbreak. People have turned to it to order groceries, supplies and other items online, helping the company bring in record revenue and profits between April and June.

New York City restaurants can resume indoor dining on Sept. 30 at 25% capacity with other restrictions, Gov. Andrew Cuomo said Wednesday. Cuomo said all customers will undergo temperature checks at the door and one member of each party will have to provide information for contact tracing if needed. Customers will not be served drinks at bars, which will be to provide drinks for table service, and restaurants must close at midnight. Tables will be required to be 6 feet apart and customers must wear masks while not at the table. Indoor dining is already allowed in restaurants elsewhere in New York state. “We knew that compliance was lacking in New York City. That was a reason for caution,” Cuomo said at a Wednesday briefing. Neighboring New Jersey recently enacted similar rules.

A 3.1 magnitude earthquake near Freehold NJ woke people up across central New Jersey overnight but did not cause any damage or injuries. The 2 a.m. temblor was felt “in much of central New Jersey,” according to the National Weather Service. It lasted about 13 seconds. Shaking and loud bangs were reported, but no injuries. USGS geophysicist Robert Sanders told NBC News that an earthquake in the region is “relatively uncommon.” There are two previous recorded quakes with a magnitude 3.0 and larger within a 10-mile radius of the one in Freehold: A 3.1 earthquake in 1992 and a 3.5 earthquake in 1979. “It will take a few days or weeks before analysts can see if there’s a specific fault line at cause here,” Sanders said. He added that structural damage is possible but unlikely.

New York state marked a milestone of progress in fighting coronavirus infections on Monday, with a full month of fewer than 1% of virus tests coming back positive. Gov. Andrew Cuomo announced the 30-day stretch of good news while urging people to remain cautious during Labor Day weekend get-togethers. He attributed the state’s progress to its statewide mask mandate and an approach to reopening that’s been slower than in many other states. “It took the work of all of us to get here, and to protect this progress we will need to all continue to wash our hands, wear our masks, remain socially distant and above all, stay New York tough,” Cuomo said in a statement. There is concern that case counts could rise as schools, college campuses and more businesses reopen.

US President Donald Trump has urged New York City to drop its anti-coronavirus restrictions immediately, accusing its leadership of “destroying the place.” Trump criticized the persisting anti-coronavirus measures in the city on Tuesday, personally attacking Governor Andrew Cuomo and Mayor Bill de Blasio. “New York City must stop the Shutdown now. The Governor & Mayor are destroying the place!” the president wrote on Twitter. In a subsequent tweet, the president also alleged that all the anti-coronavirus lockdowns are actually a dirty pre-election trick by the Democrats and that they will be lifted immediately after the polls. “These shutdowns are ridiculous, and only being done to hurt the economy prior to the most important election, perhaps, in our history!” Trump claimed.
