Bichasdei Hashem, there is a slight improvement in the condition of Monsey stabbing victim R’ Yosef Neiman. Sources tell YWN that he has opened his eyes, and is breathing on his own. As YWN reported around 8 weeks ago, Neiman was brutally stabbed during the horrific Chanukah Monsey attack at Rabbi Rottenberg’s Shul. He was rushed to the hospital where he lay in a coma after suffering a skull fracture from the machete which went through his brain. The right side of his body was left fully paralyzed from the brain injury he sustained.

New York State Police say they plan to go forward with a body camera pilot program for state troopers, a move that would change the agency’s status as one of the few primary state law enforcement agencies in the nation without body or dashboard cameras. Kevin Bruen, first deputy superintendent of the New York State Police, disclosed the plan for a pilot program Monday at the state Capitol. He did not provide details of the plan, such as how many troopers will receive the devices and how much money the pilot program might cost. His comments come months after a nationwide Associated Press survey found that New York State Police are the country’s largest primary state law enforcement agency not equipped with body or dashboard cameras.

A woman tried to board a plane in New York with a loaded handgun in her carry-on luggage, the Transportation Security Administration said. TSA officers spotted the .380-caliber gun as the woman went through security at Stewart International Airport in Newburgh on Friday, the agency said in a news release. The gun was loaded with seven bullets including one in the chamber, the TSA said. The woman, a resident of Lagrangeville, New York, told officials she had forgotten that she had her gun with her. New York State Police confiscated the weapon and detained the woman for questioning. The TSA says a typical penalty for carrying a handgun into a checkpoint is a $4,100 fine. (AP)

It still wasn’t clear what the fire’s cause was, but fire officials said it was about 30% contained by late Monday morning. A helicopter and 40 firefighters were working to put the fire out Monday, officials said.

Erick Diaz Cruz said in his lawsuit filed Wednesday in federal court that he was visiting his mother in Brooklyn on a valid tourist visa when he was shot in the face Feb. 6 by an agent who was trying to arrest Cruz’s mother’s companion. The officer gave no warning before firing at Diaz Cruz from about 4 feet away, according to the lawsuit. Diaz Cruz was unarmed, and the officer “had no reason to believe he was armed,” he claims in the lawsuit.
