The day before Pesach began, R’ Shlomo Rechnitz of Los Angeles enabled the simchas Yom Tov of thousands of avreichim of the Mir Yeshivah in Israel, who before the most expensive Yom Tov of the year, haven’t been paid their monthly Kollel stipends for Shevat and Adar. Thanks to a generous $3 million donation by R’ Rechnitz, one of our generations’s biggest supporters of the Torah world, the avreichim received their stipends and a special Yom Tov bonus right before Pesach began. This is the second time this year that R’ Rechnitz contributed to the Mir right before Yom Tov when the yeshiva found itself unable to finance the monthly stipends of the avreichim.

The U.S. death toll from the coronavirus eclipsed Italy’s for the highest in the world Saturday at about 20,000, as Chicago and other cities across the Midwest braced for a potential surge in victims and moved to snuff out smoldering hot spots of contagion before they erupt. With the New York area still deep in crisis, fear mounted over the spread of the scourge into the nation’s heartland. Twenty-four residents of an Indiana nursing home hit by COVID-19 have died, while a nursing home in Iowa saw 14 deaths. Chicago’s Cook County has set up a temporary morgue that can take more than 2,000 bodies.

Governor and mayor locked horns again Saturday, this time over whether school buildings in the nation’s largest district would close for the rest of the year, with classes continuing online. New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio said in a news briefing that public school sites in the city’s 1.1 million-student school district would shutter for the rest of the academic year to curb the spread of the coronavirus. Soon afterward, Gov. Andrew Cuomo said at his own briefing that the decision was his to make. “It is my legal authority in this situation, yes,” Cuomo said.

New York state recorded 731 new coronavirus deaths Tuesday, marking the biggest one-day jump in the outbreak. The state’s death toll since the beginning of the outbreak is now 5,489, according to Gov. Andrew Cuomo. More people have now died from the coronavirus in New York City than perished in the Sept. 11 attack on the World Trade Center. At least 3,202 people have been killed in the city by the virus, according to a new count released by city health officials Tuesday. The deadliest terror attack on U.S. soil killed 2,753 people in the city and 2,977 overall, when hijacked planes slammed into the World Trade Center, the Pentagon and a field near Shanksville, Pennsylvania, on Sept. 11, 2001.

The Levaya of the Klausenberger Rebbitzen was held on Monday in Netanya, Eretz Yisroel. Due to the dangers of the COVID-19 pandemic which has already taken the lives of around dozens and dozens of Yidden around the globe, the Sanzer Rebbe enforced the social distaning rules for the Levaya. Normally, this Levaya would of had thousands of people attending, but the Rebbe only allowed his sons to attend, and everyone else to listen on phone-hookup. Naturally, when YWN published one of the articles showing how the NYPD attempted to shut down one of those Levayos, YWN was accused of being self-hating Jews and publishing “hate”.

We regret to inform you of the petirah of Hagaon Harav Avraham Yaakov Littman zt’l of Monsey, NY. He was 71 years old and contracted Covid-19 two weeks ago. His condition deteriorated over the past week and he passed away early Erev Shabbos. For more than thirty years Rav Avrohom Yaakov served as a senior maggid shiur at Yeshiva Ohel Torah in Monsey where he was renowned as a singularly outstanding lamdan and gaon ba’Torah who influenced many hundreds of talmidim. In his youth Rav Avraham Yaakov zt”l was a close talmid of numerous gedolei olam: Rav Mottel Weinberg zt”l, Rav Shmuel Brudny zt”l, Rav Shmuel Berenbaum zt”l and Rav Berel Soloveitchik zt”l. They all recognized his unique capacity for gadlius baTorah and all had a profound impact on Rav Avrohom Yaakov zt”l.
