Puerto Rico was spared the brunt of hurricane-force winds from Dorian that tore through the British and US Virgin Islands Wednesday, flooding roads and leaving areas without power.
But the threat is far from over for the mainland, with Dorian forecast to strengthen into a “powerful hurricane” as it heads toward Florida and other parts of the east coast.
As of 8 p.m. ET, the eye of Hurricane Dorian was located roughly 50 miles northeast of San Juan with hurricane-force winds extending 15 miles from the center of the storm, CNN meteorologist Dave Hennen said.

Governor Cuomo released a statement today on the Orthodox Jew who was attacked in Crown Heights with a giant brick:
“I am sickened to learn of the vicious attack on a Hasidic Jewish man in Lincoln Terrace Park in Brooklyn. This incident is unfortunately just the latest in a string of horrific anti-Semitic attacks happening across the state and the country – part of the cancer of division and hate that has been injected into the body politic of this nation.
“In New York, we have zero tolerance for bigotry and hate-fueled violence of any kind, and I am directing the State Police Hate Crimes Task Force to provide the NYPD with any resources necessary to investigate this incident and bring the individual responsible to justice.

The parents of Israel Defense Forces’ soldier Hadar Goldin, whose remains have been held captive by Hamas since “Operation Protective Edge” in 2014, met on Thursday with U.N. Secretary General António Guterres at the world body’s headquarters in New York to press for escalated international efforts in securing their son’s return.
World Jewish Congress president Ronald S. Lauder and former Canadian Justice Minister Irwin Cotler accompanied Leah and Simcha Goldin at their meeting with the secretary general.
Goldin was killed and his remains taken on Aug. 1, 2014, during a declared ceasefire between Israel and Gaza, rendering the abduction a violation of international humanitarian law.

President Trump mocked Sen. Kirsten Gillibrand (D-N.Y.) less than an hour after she dropped out of the Democratic presidential primary race.
“A sad day for the Democrats, Kirsten Gillibrand has dropped out of the Presidential Primary. I’m glad they never found out that she was the one I was really afraid of!,” Trump tweeted Wednesday.
Trump’s remark came shortly after Gillibrand announced she was ending her campaign, leaving the field with 20 candidates.
Gillibrand’s decision also came hours before the deadline to qualify for the September primary debate. The New York Democrat had not met the criteria needed to appear on next month’s debate stage.

Honduran President Juan Orlando Hernandez will travel to Yerushalayim to inaugurate a “diplomatic office” in the city on Sept. 1, the Honduran government said in a statement on Tuesday.
The office represents an extension of Honduras’s embassy in the country, the Honduran government said.
Hernandez said in March that he would open a trade office in Yerushalayim. It was not immediately clear how the diplomatic office would be related to a trade office.
“For me it’s the recognition that Jerusalem is the capital of Israel,” Hernandez said on Tuesday.

Former vice president Joe Biden has been leading the Democratic field in most polls since he entered the race, but even he acknowledges that he’s a long way from winning the nomination. If he does, Biden said it would be ideal for his ticket to reflect the diversity of the American population.
The presidential hopeful told a small group of black journalists Tuesday that if he wins the nomination, he’d prefer that his vice presidential candidate not be a white male.

A Florida man was sentenced to 15 months in prison on Friday for threatening to behead US Senator and Democratic presidential hopeful Bernie Sanders, federal prosecutors said.
The man, 58-year-old Robert Pratersch of Kissimmee, in September 2018 left three voicemail messages at Sanders’ Vermont office where he made antisemitic threats and threatened to kill Sanders by beheading him in an “ISIS-style” video.
Pratersch was convicted in April of threatening a federal official and making threats over interstate communications media in April. He could have been sentenced to as much as 15 years in prison.
A public defender representing Pratersch did not immediately respond to a request for comment.
