During a meeting with the Irish prime minister in the Oval Office on Wednesday, President Donald Trump made a striking remark about Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer, D-N.Y., claiming that he no longer identifies with his Jewish heritage.
“Schumer is a Palestinian as far as I’m concerned. You know, he’s become a Palestinian. He used to be Jewish. He’s not Jewish anymore. He’s a Palestinian,” Trump stated.
Schumer, the most senior Jewish elected official in U.S. history, was the subject of Trump’s comment after a reporter raised a question about tax cuts.
“We are planning to lower taxes. Yeah. If the Democrats behave,” Trump responded, shifting the conversation to what he saw as inappropriate conduct from Democrats during his first address to Congress the previous week.
Trump was particularly frustrated with their reactions when he acknowledged the mothers of two women killed by undocumented immigrants and when he honored a young cancer patient who was made an honorary Secret Service agent.
“The only thing they liked is when they heard about the death taking place with Ukraine, that they were happy about,” Trump said, criticizing Democratic lawmakers.
He also took aim at Sen. Elizabeth Warren, D-Mass., referencing her past claims of Native American ancestry.
“Pocahontas was very happy,” he remarked.
Expressing his frustration, Trump condemned Democratic lawmakers, accusing them of being out of touch with reality.
“These people are sick. They don’t know what’s happening in the real world. The Democrats have to get their act together, and if they don’t vote, then what?” he asked. “You’re going to have taxes that are going to go through the roof. You’re going to have a very bad time. You’re going to have some very bad things happen and people are going to blame the Democrats.”
Earlier, Trump was questioned about whether he had a scheduled meeting with Russian President Vladimir Putin. He did not provide a direct response but spoke positively about ongoing diplomatic efforts between Ukraine and Russia, facilitated by Saudi Arabia. Secretary of State Marco Rubio had announced the day before that Ukraine had agreed to the framework of a ceasefire, and Trump noted that the next step rested with Russia.
“We had a great success yesterday. We have a full ceasefire when it, if it kicks in, we have to see, it’s up to Russia now. But we’ve had a good relationship with both parties,” Trump explained. “People are going to Russia right now as we speak, and hopefully we can get a ceasefire from Russia. And if we do, I think that would be 80% of the way to getting this horrible bloodbath — and it’s a bloodbath that is taking place over there.”
According to Trump, the ongoing conflict between Russia and Ukraine is leading to the deaths of thousands of young soldiers each week.
“And that’s stupid war. That would have never happened if I were president,” he asserted, reiterating his belief that the October 7, 2023, terrorist attacks on Israel would also have been prevented under his leadership.
Regarding past communications with Putin, Trump was vague about any recent discussions.
“I’ve gotten some positive messages, but a positive message means nothing,” he said.
Emphasizing the severity of the global situation, Trump warned that it could escalate into a catastrophic conflict.
“This is a very serious situation. This is a situation that could lead to World War Three, and Biden should have never let it happen,” Trump stated. “Incompetence allowed this to happen. This shouldn’t have happened. October 7th in the Middle East should have never happened with Israel. The horrible, leaving the way they left Afghanistan should have never happened. Inflation should have never happened.”
