Denver’s mayor has pledged to protect migrants in his sanctuary city from large-scale deportations, vowing to deploy local police and rally tens of thousands of residents to defend the city. He likened the potential standoff to a “Tiananmen Square moment.”
Democratic Mayor Mike Johnston recently explained his stance to Denverite, responding to President-elect Donald Trump’s promise to implement widespread deportations of undocumented immigrants across the nation. “More than us having [federal agents] stationed at the county line to keep them out, you would have 50,000 Denverites there,” Johnston said.

On Friday, the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention announced the first confirmed case of H5N1 bird flu in a child within the country. The child exhibited mild symptoms and has since recovered.
Earlier in the week, California’s public health department shared details of the case, emphasizing that there was no indication of the virus spreading between individuals. Tests conducted on the child’s family members returned negative results.
The CDC reiterated that no evidence currently suggests person-to-person transmission of the H5N1 virus from the child to others. The agency added that it is continuing to trace contacts as a precautionary measure.

Raphael Warnock and Jon Ossoff, both Democratic Georgia senators, are facing a backlash from the Atlanta-area Jewish community over their votes to halt certain arms sales to Israel on Wednesday.
AIPAC, the Atlanta JCRC and the local Anti-Defamation League and American Jewish Committee chapters joined 46 other Jewish organizations, including more than 20 Atlanta synagogues, in a letter to the senators on Thursday condemning their votes.
“Your vote demonstrates that your commitment to Israel’s security is not ironclad,” the organizations wrote. “It comes at the expense of Israeli defense.”

By Rabbi Yair Hoffman It is a clear halacha that every Jewish person is obligated to make every possible effort to save life – even to the point where one may put their own life at risk. This principle is derived from the Toras Kohanim (Sifra on Parshas Behar 5:2), and is cited in  Bava Metzia (62a) regarding two people walking in the desert with only enough water for one person to survive. This case led to a dispute between Ben Petura and Rabbi Akiva concerning the interpretation of the pasuk “and your brother shall live with you.” However, all agree that from this verse we learn the obligation to make every effort to save another’s life, even at risk to oneself.

Lori Chavez-DeRemer to lead the Department of Labor in his second administration, elevating a Republican congresswoman who has strong support from unions in her district but lost reelection in November. Here are things to know about the labor secretary-designate, the agency she would lead if she wins Senate approval and how she could matter to Trump’s encore presidency. A protest against Israel turned violent on Friday night in downtown Montreal, leaving a trail of destruction as cars were set ablaze, shop windows smashed, and an effigy of Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu burned in the street. The demonstration began peacefully around 4:30 p.m. at Émilie-Gamelin Parc but quickly descended into chaos as protesters hurled small explosive devices and metal objects at police. Armed with hammers and planks of wood, some protesters vandalized storefronts while others ignited red smoke bombs to create a scene of anarchy. The violence escalated as demonstrators paraded through the city waving Palestinian flags and chanting slogans. Tensions reached their peak when an effigy of Netanyahu was set alight, drawing widespread condemnation.

Karoline Leavitt, who is set to become the White House spokesperson, shared with Walla today that President-elect Donald Trump intends to enforce stricter sanctions on Iran, adopt a firm approach toward terrorism, and strengthen America’s alliance with Israel.
“President Trump will be America’s negotiator-in-chief and will prioritize bringing innocent hostages back home,” she stated.
Families of Israeli hostages and advocates working for their release are paying close attention to President-elect Trump’s actions, optimistic that he might succeed where President Joe Biden has not: persuading Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu to agree to a ceasefire in Gaza in exchange for hostages currently held by Hamas.

A Channel 12 report alleges that Prime Minister Binyamin Netanyahu ignored years of warnings from Israeli security officials about the growing Hamas threat in Gaza and rejected multiple opportunities to eliminate top Hamas leaders Yahya Sinwar and Muhammad Deif. The Prime Minister’s Office (PMO) strongly denied the claims, calling the report “a recycling of baseless lies” intended to discredit Netanyahu. According to the Channel 12 investigation, Netanyahu received intelligence as early as 2014 detailing Hamas’s plans for a large-scale incursion into Israel. Despite repeated incidents of Hamas operatives approaching the border, the report claims Netanyahu blocked military responses and opted for a defensive strategy.

By Rabbi Yair Hoffman Introduction and Foundation The evolution of timekeeping devices has presented numerous challenges and considerations within Halacha, with each technological advancement bringing new questions to consider. Much of the following analysis is based upon information in a new article in the Ohalei Shabbos Gilyon 77-78 by Rabbi Yitzchok Rubin shlita and Rabbi Shalom Gelbar shlita. (My thanks to my brother-in-law, Rabbi Avrohom Hirsch, a prominent sofer in Yerushalayim who forwarded it to me). Early Mechanical Watches In the early 16th century, the development of mechanical watches revolutionized personal timekeeping through an intricate system of springs, gears, and the balance wheel.

Turkish Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan dismissed reports today claiming that Hamas’ political bureau had moved its operations to Turkey.
“The reports on the subject are ‘gossip’ that are part of an attempt by the US to pressure Hamas to agree to a deal,” said Fidan.
The claims follow a recent confirmation by an Arab diplomat that prominent members of Hamas’ overseas leadership had relocated from Qatar to Turkey.
However, the diplomat clarified that it is not unusual for Hamas officials abroad to stay in Turkey when they are not engaged in meetings in Doha.
This development comes after the United States requested that Qatar expel Hamas officials from Doha, which has served as a hub for the organization since 2012.
