The eighth annual report on the Torah public by the Israel Democracy Institute found a clear trend of improvement in the quality of life.
The change was due to a significant increase in the employment rate of the sector’s women and a renewed rise in the employment rate of men after several years of stagnation. The prosperity was reflected in higher incomes, lower poverty rates, and increased homeownership and car ownership.
The community numbers 1,335,000 people, 13.6% of the total population. The proportion of people up to age 19 was 58%, compared to 31% in the general Jewish public.
The education system had 390,000 students, representing 20% of all students in Israel and 26% of Jewish education, and was growing at 3.7% per year compared to 2.2% for state education.
At the beginning of 2023, there were 156,000 studying in yeshivos and kollelim, with the numbers increasing annually since 1999.
About 16,700, representing 5% of all Israeli students, were studying in colleges in the 2022/23 academic year, with 69% women.
Around 110,000 men of primary working age (ages 25-64) were employed, representing 55% of the male working-age tzibbur, the highest percentage since 1995. The number of working women (aged 25-64) exceeded 80% for the first time, reaching 157,000, an increase from 142,000 in the previous year.
